CEO Elly Sharp has been heralding the change, which is seeing the company modernise and streamline as well as increase its diversity. Based in Tirohanga in the Eastern Bay of Plenty just outside Ōpōtiki, Tirohanga Fruit Company is a family owned and operated rural land development company with investments primarily in kiwifruit but also farming. Owned by Elly’s father Ray and stepmother Lis, the couple started the company in 1995. Elly came on board over two years ago to transition Tirohanga Fruit Company to a sustainable intergenerational family business. She had spent almost 10 years working for Fonterra from customer service through to regional supply chain manager for Fonterra’s Southern Cone region, which covers the southern half of South America. She then spent five and a half years working for Zespri in the Bay of Plenty as market access manager. Two younger siblings also work in Tirohanga Fruit Company: sister Maria Sharp is the HR manager and brother Paul Walker-Sharp is the company commercial manager. The main day-to-day activities of Tirohanga Fruit Company are kiwifruit orchard development and management, with administrative tasks for the other companies that it has an ownership interest in. It also provides contracting services to these related orchards. Tirohanga Fruit Company manages over 100 canopy hectares on 16 orchards between Te Kaha and Ōpōtiki. It produces around 1.7m trays of kiwifruit in a good season.
