Wallace site in Waitoa, which will result in more jobs and flow on economic benefits for the region, says WIEL project manager new capital works Neville Thompson. In the first stage four new ponds have already been constructed and are in the process of getting commissioned. Neville says this will ensure a high standard of compliance and have the capacity to cater for all new and future plans for any expanded operations with new filtration and UV technology discharging for irrigation to land or back to the river. The old ponds will be slowly decommissioned, one at a time, after the new ponds get up and running and meeting all the new consent conditions. The tannery on the site has also been upgraded with new equipment to enhance capacity and operational efficiencies and further enhance environmental compliance. The original J.D.Wallace plant was established around 1940’s with a piggery operation and then later a rendering plant was built for dairy cattle dead stock, which ending up covering 70 % of the North Island’s dead stock. A new joint venture eventuated when Greenlea Premiere Meats had been looking at building a new rendering plant for both its Hamilton and Morrinsville operations. It achieved a building consent to build a new protein plant early in 2018 at the Morrinsville Plant. to page 32
