After the completion of the new ponds another development stage will run concurrently, the construction of a new 4000sqm protein plant. After starting this new project now over two years ago before Covid-19, Neville says there has been a lot of uncertainty and has seen the JV locking in a contract ordering equipment from overseas and trying to lock in contracts for equipment supplies. Building works have commenced and it is expected the new building will be completed in August 2023 with commissioning by December that same year. It is closely based on the original Morrinsville design, that Greenlea achieved a full resource consent for through both those local district councils, but twice as big starting with a larger full building envelope where the raw material product is backed in through a series of doors to maintain any escaping odour through two bio filters operational at all times. This new plant will add considerable product value producing top tallow and meal products, says Neville, with the high quality tallow produced becoming important for biodiesel in overseas export markets. The meal will be used for a variety of high-grade products also in overseas countries mainly for animal feed. A number of meat companies will supply the fresh raw material to the new protein plant. Neville says it has been important to use local contractors in the Waikato and wider area for the project where possible. MW Builders will be the head contractor for the building and other contractors include Hennessey Electrical Solutions and Gray Consulting Engineers. Pattle Delamore Partners has also been involved in designing the four new ponds and also assisting with technical support for the new protein plant through Feathers Planning. The low temperature rendering system is being supplied and installed by a New Zealand company Rendertech, which uses local New Zealand suppliers for equipment supported by equipment imported from America, Australia, Norway and Sweden. Neville, who previously worked for Greenlea Premier Meats Ltd for the last 24 years as the engineering and projects manager, says that the new protein plant will run year-round 24 hours a day, six days week with maintenance completed on Sundays. He says it will be the latest plant in Australasia in terms of operating and environmental Your Business, Your Industry, Your News. Also in the background WIEL is working with Powerco and North Power to build a new 10MW substation to accommodate both current use and future growth required for both the new ponds and protein plant. While the plant will be able to operate during its first stages without this it will considerably increase efficiencies and capacity, says Neville. He says that the significant investment being made by WIEL will mean good things for the region in terms of job creation – both during the development and after. He says there will also be significant flow-on effects for the local economy extending to the larger Waikato wider region and that WIEL is proud to be making a difference to the local community in which it operates.
