The retail area has been designed within close proximity of the waterfront enabling a boat owner to park their boat directly in front, walk ashore, and access all the amenities. Each stage of canal revetment wall has been constructed with hand-laid stone in keeping with the other canal developments to ensure longevity, low maintenance, and a high degree of aesthetics. Along with several publicly accessible beach areas designed in connection with public reserves, creates a very attractive setting. Leigh says it is still satisfying to see people’s jaws drop when they see the quality of the development. The development consists of a network of sparkling waterways, winding amongst impressive architecturally designed homes. Larger lot sizes give people a chance to create high-value waterfront properties with a private berth and boat ramp allowing you to park your boat right outside your home. Most Kiwis love some form of water sports whether it be boating, stand up paddle boarding, or to simply leap into the water for a swim, Marsden Cove is the ideal place. Located within Marsden Cove is the new and exciting retirement village known as, The Anchorage. Construction commenced in 2017 consisting of freehold units, villas and apartments along with a residents’ association committee. Once completed, upwards of 200 units along with a hospital care facility will be present. Architecturally designed villas will be located along the canal front with privately owned mooring easements similar to canal front properties, enabling watercraft access or simply enjoy the environs of the waterways. Leigh suggests The Anchorage is one of only two waterfront retirement villages that he knows of, the other village is planned to be located at Whitianga Waterways, conveniently named “The Moorings”. “One thing that really sets Marsden Cove apart from canal developments in other countries is the ability to safely jump straight in the water. For example, in Australia and Florida people don’t often swim in their canals for fear of something nasty in the water which may bite or sting. “Here at Marsden Cove, a swim off the end of your jetty is all part of the holiday lifestyle people get used to.” Hoppers suggest maintaining the water quality in the waterways is a high priority and is achieved through regimented monitoring programmes. To date, monitoring data show excellent readings, above the levels set by regional authorities. Encouraging a healthy ecosystem has allowed for safe and clean swimming water for all to enjoy. Leigh encourages people curious about the area to come up and look around, enjoy the beach settings within the development, or make use of the public boat ramp at Marsden Cove marina. Marsden Cove is located 25 minutes drive south of Whangarei, and on completion of the new Northern motorway, it will be 1 hour and 30 minutes from Auckland CBD.
