CONTRACTING In an era where increasingly health & safety and environmental impact, is rightfully given priority, one company is doing its bit to supply products and services that deliver on both fronts. biOx International is New Zealand’s leading supplier of sophisticated dust, odour and cooling fogging system technologies, used here in a wide range of situations. Colin Heeney is a director and project manager of the company. He’s based in the Bay of Plenty. He explains how the technology works to counter the effects of dust and odour on demolition and construction sites, waste management facilities, anywhere where material is being disturbed. “Our fogging cannons produce micron size water droplets. These adhere to dust and settle it down out of the air. We’ve been doing this for 22 years now but the motivation when we first started was to create an efficient way to use our odour control product, where less water is used and the droplets act as a carrier for an oxidising agent.” And beyond those industrial and commercial situations where dust and odour mitigation regulatory compliances, the fogging cannons also assist in other more entertaining occasions, such as music festivals and places where large crowd numbers and heat impact on the well-being and enjoyment of spectators. Equipment is leased out, or in some cases purchased by businesses needing ongoing dust and odour suppression. What separates biOx from others in the sector is that the equipment supplied uses high pressure and low water volumes. Other systems, Colin explains, creates a much droplet size, leading to the potential for ground soaking and run-off. “It’s not really effective as it doesn’t stick to the dust, rather just wets the ground.” biOx supplies two fogging cannon application options. High pressure (1200psi) creates very little wetting and is used in predominantly airborne dust situations, while pressure can be dropped down with another pump to 300psi which creates a heavier droplet which also dampens dust to the ground, preventing it from rising up in the air again. “You see the situation sometimes where a worker on a demolition site is standing with a hose trying to bring dust particles down but all this does essentially is create a volume of water on the ground that puddles and can run offsite.” The Health & Safety in the Workplace Act 2015 requires mitigation of airborne particles, but Colin says it is only with improved monitoring and enforcement by Work Safe staff that industry wide dust control standards across the board will improve. Beyond fogging cannons, biOx also supplies fixed line fogging systems for use in buildings. These also utilise high-pressure low-volume nozzles. The fog emits approximately 3m from the nozzle making them ideal for overhead and periphery installation, making the environment much better for those working inside. “We can also supply Jet-Zone units, attached to the end of a boom or grapple. “This moves the dust suppression to where dust is being generator. It’s especially effective on demolition sites as well as scrap metal piles.” The Spraystream cannons are imported from Belgium. BiOx has enjoyed a 10-year relationship with the supply company Savic Group and chose them because they understood how dust is suppressed, oh and that they are the best on offer world-wide. They require significant investment, but if businesses are serious in protecting stakeholders they are worth it.
