In addition before leaving they upgraded the formerly disused quarry to facilitate the local Maori Trust owners in developing their commercial aspirations to establish a native plant nursery, in time adding to the local economy, creating employment and income opportunities. The open communication between the client, the contractor, and the consultant, along with representatives from local iwi onsite throughout the construction, fed into the strong team culture and solutions-focused mindset. The bridge was finished in April 2022, on time and on budget, despite all the post-Covid challenges the industry was facing. Not surprisingly the project made the finals for the CCNZ (Civil Contractors New Zealand) Awards in the $2million to $5million dollar category, but what they’re most proud of is their win not only of the IPWEA (Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia) Excellence in Environmental and Sustainability Award but also their Supreme Award, a win that Mark believes can be attributed to the team work that made it all possible. “It was a project doing the right thing to start with in terms of the ecological benefits but also, the project team combined with WSP and the local kaitiaki, performed it in a sustainable way by really using recycling and sustainability on site,” he says. “What truly made it successful was that everyone worked together and trusted each other and delivered it successfully. It had an awesome culture on site and the local subbies and suppliers were also a huge part of that.” It’s a fitting award for a project successfully completed to the benefit of all parties, and not least the environment. A win for human, bird, fish and invertebrate alike.
