Owner Shaye Boddington established the business in 2013 after she and her former partner purchased some land and built an affordable, environmentally friendly 18 square metre plus loft home for themselves and their young daughter. “It was definitely something no one had really heard of and everyone thought you were a little bit mad, but they were interested to hear how it went and were kind of fascinated by the journey of it.” After having another built with some improvements incorporated and selling the first a demand developed organically which ultimately resulted in starting the business. “It’s been a business that has gradually grown each year, it started out of a passion for alternative building and creating beautiful things that were more affordable than the great big mansions that have become very common these days.” Although there is no specific criteria for a tiny house it needs to be of a size where it can be transported without any special permits, consequently Shaye’s Tiny Homes houses are all mobile friendly, “but everyone’s definition would be different”, she says. After just nine years the business has come a long way. It now offers a range of six designs which have both set and flexible elements. They have been formally licensed and are sold nationwide as well as internationally. An advantage of licensing the plans is that it eliminates the need to have branches around New Zealand. Shaye’s Tiny Homes has established affiliations with Tiny Eco Homes in the UK, Aussie Tiny Homes in Australia, NOMA House in Spain and Tiny Topanga in USA. “Our designs are quite recognised around the world as being some of the leaders in the tiny house space, so we have international partners who are licensed to build those designs overseas, we do have a large following. “We are the second most followed tiny house business on Instagram in the world, which is kind of cool.” Some of Shaye’s Tiny Homes designs will even feature in an expo in South Korea. Having built in the region of 100 tiny houses since starting the business, Shaye has been able to refine the designs and has a good handle on what will and will not work and this knowledge has been incorporated into each plan. Clients are typically singles, couples or one child families and for some a tiny house is an option to downsize and kill their mortgage or escape the rent trap. “They could be mortgage-free and just enjoy life working in areas that they are passionate about, or do a bit more travel and just get out of that absolute rat race of just trying to pay your mortgage.” The houses are available fully finished or as a shell lined with plywood and range in price finished from $200,000 to $280,000. “We’re incredibly proud to be part of that movement and look forward to helping more people and families into their own tiny homes.”
