Directors Hamish Commons and Michael Seeque had both been working for a large construction company, Hamish in accounts, and Michael as a sales rep. When that company was bought out they recognised a gap in the market which they set about filling with the help of two of their former colleagues who knew how to build. Home base is in Henderson Valley and their growth has paralleled Auckland’s such that they now have a staff of 22. Until relatively recently the portable buildings were mostly used on construction sites but with the arrival of Covid came a rush of residential orders as Marketing Manager Deb Muff explains. “With everyone at home they were looking for playrooms, an outside office, a temporary sleepout for someone coming home, just an extra room basically to create more space.” Infrastructure for construction remains their core business and Castle’s portable buildings can be seen on construction sites everywhere. The smallest of these weather tight, thermo-paneled buildings could be the gatehouse, while on a larger site you might see buildings attached together to make a complex big enough to cater for increasingly big numbers. “We’re now looking at duplex buildings because construction sites are growing rapidly and we’re looking at sites that are active for a longer duration so whereas 10 years ago you might have been catering for 100 staff now you could be looking at 300 to 400,” says Deb. A big infrastructure project that could take several years is a typical example. The project leaders know they’re going to need among other things a gatehouse, site offices, an ablution block, and a lunchroom; the sites are temporary and Castle Portable Buildings supply the on-site infrastructure for the project as required. If the project is big enough the company simply purchase the portable buildings whereas a smaller project might choose to hire them and so avoid having to do any maintenance on the way through. As with any rental property the responsibility for a broken tap or damaged lock goes straight back to the owner, and in this case Castle Portable Buildings also do the foundations required to set the building up on. While growth has been steady Deb believes one of their strengths is that they’re not in a hurry as they move south of the Bombay Hills. They have a presence in Hamilton and can be found as far afield as Gisborne thanks to the arrival of Cosco. “We’re taking it slow, but we know we can meet demand,” says Deb. With all the snags hitting construction projects and the supply chain that feeds it, it’s likely that demand for Castle Portable Buildings will only continue to grow.
