Haigh Workman’s new Whangarei office, which opened just under a year ago, is strategically positioned in an area of high growth: One Tree Point. Company managing director John Papesch says Marsden Maritime Holdings’ vision for the region will see it boom in coming years with over 150ha of prime commercial property available immediately behind Northland’s deep-water port and transport infrastructure. And off the back of this will come jobs and the need for residential housing. Haigh Workman is already lending its skills to a residential subdivision in Waipu due to begin construction shortly. John says in all its projects Haigh Workman is proud to be helping to contribute to local economies and communities. Established in 1980 Haigh Workman is a multi-disciplined civil, structural, geotechnical and environmental engineering and consulting firm. It offers with a team of around 30 engineers across three offices based in Kerikeri, Warkworth and Whangarei. All of the engineers, geologists, and technicians are hand picked for their expertise in their respective fields and their demonstrated commitment to project delivery and customer support, says John. Proudly 100% Northland-owned and operated, its growth and success can be attributed to the continuous and growing support of its local customer base, he says. At the moment Haigh Workman is working on a special project for Northland Regional Council: the Otiria and Moerewa flood scheme to restore the Otiria Stream to its natural flow, which was impeded decades ago due to the construction of Ngapipito and Pokapu Roads and Otiria’s railroad embankment. Stage two is due for completion before Christmas and will see the replacement of an existing 18-metre-long road bridge with the new 60-metre structure, effectively tripling the flow of floodwaters which can pass beneath it. “Council came to Haigh Workman with the idea as a concept. It was then a question of how to bring the idea into reality. “Haigh Workman came up with detailed modelling for what the solution would look like, going through all the options to get the best result. It will have a massively positive impact on the community.” Another large community project is the Bay of Islands Sports Hub in Waipapa for Far North District Council. Haigh Workman was involved from the inception helping council with pre-purchase due diligence with a geotechnical appraisal of the land. The project had unique challenges as it was constructed on a flood plain with soft alluvial soils requiring utmost care and attention in the design phase. Stormwater management is via a large wetland treatment facility Haigh Workman designed. All the sports fields have drainage as well to make them more playable year round. The first phase of the project was forming the access and gravel car park. Now the project is into the next stage to seal the car park and start building the facility “Community projects are really satisfying,” says John, “as communities need these sorts of facilities to thrive.” Housing projects are another way Haigh Workman adds value. It has been working on the new Arvida living well community, Arvida Te Puna Waiora, in Kerikeri. Haigh Workman has been supplying civil, geotechnical, structural and environmental engineering services from initial feasibility before the client purchased the land to consent development, resource consenting and construction. It has also worked on the Sir James Henare social housing project in Moerewa for Iwi housing provider Ngati Hine Health Trust, and, at a similar scale, a 46-lot residential housing subdivision for Kerikeri Inlet Contractors following on from a similar project it had completed previously for the client. 1 1 1b 1b 2 3 4 5 6 7 State Highway 10 S K 8 9 Site Boundary If you’re in the market for a new home with pedigree, look no further than Versatile Kerikeri’s new show home, opening soon.
