Oswald Homes BUILDING A passion for old-school trade skills and craftsmanship lies at the heart of Waihi builder Oswald Homes. The business is owned and run by husband and wife team Greg and Beth Oswald who employ seven trade staff. Greg’s father and grandfather were builders, reflecting a heritage that is now in its third generation and the source of Oswald Builders ethos. “I’m passionate about high quality building work,” Greg says. “We are trying to keep a lot of that craftsmanship alive really and strive to do a really good job and use quality products,” An outstanding example of this approach is a three level, 495 square metre Waihi Beach home built by Oswald Homes for Greg’s parents Robbie and Bev Oswald. Robbie, with his critical eye for detail, and Greg’s brother Dale who is also a builder, contributed to making the significant project a family affair. Located in Tohora View and completed midlast year, it is sited on an impressive, elevated site with views that stretch to Mt Maunganui in the south. It is the first home Robbie and Bev have built for 30 years. Its design is a distillation of ideas and preferences gathered over many years, Greg says. “That’s come through into the house. There’s lots of things that they really, really liked over the years and that became a list and a set of plans and then it became their dream home.” The spacious first level above the basement contains the kitchen with a scullery, open plan dining, two living areas plus a bedroom and an office. A stairway and balustrade with a combination of glass, timber, stainless steel and carpeted steps leads to the third level. Its balconies on the first and second levels provide for al fresco living on warm Waihi days and nights. The interior design incorporates timber features of American ash and Tasmania oak sarking and timber furniture which creates a subtle, warm contrast to the clean, light colour scheme. Tasmania oak battens in the kitchen ceiling with strip LED lighting recessed between them is a special feature that adds additional ambience. “We wanted to use some really nice [timber] materials and use them well. It is quite expensive so we used it in areas where it counted to add to the look and feel of the house.” The top floor has three bedrooms, including the master bedroom with ensuite and walk-in wardrobe, a separate bathroom and a lounge. The exterior is a combination of Sto plaster and Linea Oblique weatherboard and the contrast of vertical cedar fixed with silicon bronze nails is particularly striking. The size and design of the house, including its pillarless balconies, required steel and concrete beams plus 4000 concrete blocks for its core structure and enabled structural columns to be eliminated from the garage/ basement. “It’s a stunning house, we’ve had lots and lots of comments and it’s pretty hard not to fall in love with the view.” While this is a house of some scale and a labour of love, the same passion and bespoke craftsmanship is put into all builds completed by Oswald Homes. This is well reflected in a beach house built by the company in Waihi Beach that oozes rustic character. Its design and features includes polished concrete, copper downpipes and internal finishes, a plunge pool and built-in barbeque kitchen which have been chosen for their aesthetics as well as their practicality. Although it presents an air of modesty, there are high-end subtleties that bring this home into a class of its own.
