| 13 REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Northland: Soho Group The project encompasses 69 architecturally designed homes and one of the stand-out features of the development is a commitment to sustainability and accessibility. In the ever-evolving realm of urban design and architecture, the work of integrated design practice Context on the Wanaka Street project in Whangarei is testament to its design philosophy, exemplifying a commitment to creating spaces that serve as living ecosystems, both socially and environmentally. Located at 3 Wanaka Street, Tikipunga, 5 kilometres north of Whangarei, the project comprises a total of 55 units, a mix of terraced housing and three-level walk-up apartments, catering to diverse housing needs. Soho Group was the developer working to deliver the inished project to client Kāinga Ora. Context senior designer Emma Morris says the project was carefully orchestrated to encapsulate the essence of community living and was developed in close collaboration with Kāinga Ora to cater to residents of varying ages and mobility. One of the standout features of the Wanaka Street project was the dedication to preserve a lush reserve to the north of the site. Drawing inspiration from the dappled light iltering through the forest, Context designed coloured window panels that added a unique touch to the units. Powder-coated aluminium screens further enhanced the aesthetics and functionality of the spaces, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. Emma says that the project was meticulously planned to ensure that living areas received ample sunlight. This Creating vibrant, sustainable environments involved careful surveying of tree heights and solar analysis, rea irming Context’s commitment to integrating natural elements into the design. The architectural choices made by Context were also deeply rooted in sustainability and functionality. Bricks, chosen as the primary building material, o er robustness, durability and age gracefully over time. They give the community a sense of permanence as well as being lowmaintenance, says Emma. But it's not just about the physical structures; Context places a strong emphasis on creating communal spaces that foster a sense of community. Multifunctional communal spaces, communal green areas, a community garden, bike sheds and children's play areas provide avenues for residents to come together and build lasting connections. With a team of over 100 dedicated professionals, Context spans across various sectors, from residential developments and a ordable housing to retail, hospitality and interiors. Emma says Context’s work on the Wanaka Street project aligns perfectly with its mission of designing for life. “At Context we are not merely constructing buildings; we are creating vibrant, sustainable environments that regenerate our world socially, economically and ecologically.”
