34 | Jessie Developments: Redwood Green Development DEVELOPMENT T T Richard Loader Meandering village green Redwood Green takes its name from the two aged and giant redwoods growing there. Whangarei’s residential development of Redwood Green encompasses a meandering village green and a network of walkways that connect to the town and its surrounding natural beauty, while embracing the magical spirit of what it is to be a close community in the 21st century. Located in the suburb of Glenbervie, on the northern part of Whangarei as you exit towards the beaches and the coastal settlement of Ngungaru, Redwood Green is a twelve-minute drive from the centre of Whangarei township, and features the Hātea River; the river that makes Whangarei so special. With beautiful lush forest cladding at its side, the Hātea River runs all the way through Whangarei and out into the suburbs. Walking and cycle paths have been created through Redwood Green, forming the key missing link that connects other tracks and park areas in Whangarei to its river. Schools, golf courses and sports grounds near Redwood Green holds the vision of community close at heart, while a short walking distance away the famous Whangarei Falls adds to the magic of the development. Redwood Green, taking its name from two aged and giant redwoods growing there, celebrates the important things in life, including diversity, healthy green spaces and leading-edge urban design along with a lived-in environment that values pedestrian and cycle activity over the use of motor vehicles. Unlike traditional developments, most cars will access their property from an internal mews lane at the rear, allowing for greater pedestrian and cycle connectivity. Jessie Developments’ Director and driver behind Redwood Green, Greg Barbour, says the development’s benchmark is for ‘people-centred’ urban design that supports open space, wellness and unity. “We’ve achieved this by dotting house sites around a beautiful central park, and connecting neighbours over a village green. The front yard, and front of the house sometimes faces a long linear park, or sometimes the village green, and that really sets it apart.” Greg makes the point that while this approach was common in the 19th and early 20th centuries in other cities around the world, it is a unique concept in New Zealand. “The idea is that you get a front yard space facing the park, and we’ve pushed the houses forward so that residents can communicate with each other across a low fence. Mews lanes at the rear of each site allow for vehicle access and garaging, and you have a private backyard space. That’s a very different design philosophy to most developments, which have streets fronts and garaging, with the residents blocked out from the rest of the world.” As a boutique developer, Greg says the company’s focus is on developing special sites. “We usually take waterfront sites and have a preference for undulating sites with views, creating something special, where people can enjoy a community and nature orientated lifestyle. With Redwood Green, we want to bring a development to Whangarei that stands out from what might be a typical approach to residential developments.” Developments like Redwood Green are always a partnership with others who share the same strong vision.
