| 47 T T Russell Fredric Firm enjoys rapid growth CB Civil employs nearly 150 staff and operates out of Auckland, Hamilton, and Tauranga. CB Civil CONTRACTING In just a little more than a decade, CB Civil has become a nationally recognised company that has successfully completed numerous legacy projects. Headquartered in Auckland, the company employs nearly 150 staff and operates out of Auckland, Hamilton, and Tauranga where a branch was established August last year. Works have also been completed in Northland using both the Auckland team and local Northland subcontractors. Tauranga area manager Liam McCord says, like the business overall, its growth in this city has been dramatic with the five staff originally employed mushrooming to 35. “We’ve successfully completed numerous jobs for the Tauranga City Council, and we’ve become approved contractors to work on three waters projects. We’ve got a full-time [potable] waters team dedicated to TCC replacing water mains and other infrastructure on the network.” Current and forward work is extremely buoyant right across the business with significant contracts secured. These include high value, long term projects such as a 120 lot subdivision at Omokoroa, and collaborating with Higgins on the Rangiuru Business Park Interchange Project. Liam holds degree in civil engineering with honours from the University of Waikato and is a chartered professional engineer. He graduated 14 years ago and is passionate about his work and the industry overall which offers amazing lifetime career opportunities in many spheres, he says. “Basically, I like building infrastructure and I’m one of those weirdos that just gets really excited about bridges and pipes and concrete; I love the science and physics that goes into it, and I love explaining that to people.” For those contemplating a career in the industry, hard work, diligence and integrity is well rewarded, Liam says. “Typically in engineering you’ve got two paths. One goes down the consulting side designing things, the other down the construction/management side. For a young engineer these days the opportunities are endless. There’s such a shortage of good people.” Although those are the two main strands, consulting and construction, the opportunities within these are extremely broad and include estimating, contract negotiation, running sites, overseeing quality, methodology, and tendering and writing. Writing includes detailing the management systems, construction, people, related projects and broader outcomes and benefits related to a proposed project “That engineering qualification is the key to any one of those strands. For me, gaining an engineering qualification just opened so many doors for me. I’ve worked in Italy and Australia and the thing about engineering is it’s like a universal language.” Fundamental to engineering always looking for a better, more efficient, more economical way to do things and finding the right people to do it; innovation can go a long way and can potentially save millions of dollars, Liam says. A perfect example of this is the contract undertaken by CB Civil for Hamilton City Council’s Peacocke Northern Transfer Mains Project, part of a wider programme of works to provide infrastructure for over 8000 new homes during the next 30 years to accommodate expansion of Hamilton City. CB Civil was recognised in the Waikato Region 2022 Civil Contractors of New Zealand award for its role as the main contractor for this portion of the Peacocke project. Although originally programmed for a three year time frame, the project was delivered 12 months ahead of schedule as well as being significantly under budget. Most impressive was that 200,000 man hours were completed without injury to staff, subcontractors, visitors or the public. CB Civil received three awards for the project comprising Category 4 Projects over $20 million, the Health and Safety Excellence award and the Supreme Award which saw them crowned Contractor of the Year.
