A focus on addressing challenges such as recruitment and nurturing a supportive family business culture has been fundamental to the continued success of Whangarei based Marine & Industrial Rebuilds Limited (MiR), says Business Manager Jeff Harrison. He says the company’s dedication to reinvestment has also enabled it to fortify the business, positioning it for sustained growth and resilience in a competitive industry. The company’s origins stem back to 2015, when it was co-founded by Les Scott-Davidson, Sean Scott-Davidson, and Derek Fortune, each bringing complementary expertise to the venture. “Les contributed skills as a Fitter & Turner, Sean as a Diesel Mechanic, and Derek as a Marine Engineer,” says Jeff. “Together, they formed a highly knowledgeable team capable of providing a wide range of services, including transmission and engine rebuilds, marine and general engineering, machining, and hydraulics.” As the business entered 2016, it experienced significant growth, marked by an increase in staffing levels and the establishment of a dedicated and loyal customer base. There was also a shifting focus toward the marine industry. In 2019 the company rebranded to Marine & Industrial Rebuilds Limited, to better reflect the evolving position in the market and the expanded suite of services. MiR’s operational footprint extends throughout Whangarei’s Port Road hub, and extends to all of Northland and its marinas. “We also have a proven track record of undertaking projects in various locations across New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands, catering to the needs of our core customer sectors, including marine commercial fishing, pleasure boat and superyacht markets, plus off-road industrial heavy diesel. “We specialise in providing a comprehensive array of services, expertise and value to our clients within the marine and industrial sectors.” Nowadays, MiR’s offerings encompass mechanical, engineering, refit, and installation services, along with the supply of new parts to meet a wide range of needs. As the trusted Northland dealer for Lee’s Group, MiR proudly represent renowned brands such as Doosan, FPT, D-I, and Zenith, ensuring access to high-quality equipment and components. “Derek, Head of Engineering, and Sean, Head of Mechanical, possess a wealth of combined knowledge and experience, allowing us to offer customised solutions that add tangible value to our clients’ specific needs. “Whether a client’s project or refit is large or small, Derek and Sean are available to consult and provide guidance, ensuring the implementation of cost-effective solutions.” The MiR team is comprised of 19 talented individuals, each bringing a wealth of experience and expertise to the engineering and mechanical divisions “We take pride in our diverse and dynamic team, says Jeff. “Our staff includes a mix of talent ranging from dedicated 1st-year apprentices eager to learn and grow, to seasoned trade veterans with over 40 years of experience. “There’s an impressive array of skill sets, encompassing design and project management, skilled engineers, fabricators and welders, precision machinists, specialists in heavy diesel machinery, and proficient mechanics. Collectively they contribute to our comprehensive service offerings.” Jeff acknowledges that in the current industry landscape, MiR’s foremost challenge in sustaining growth has revolved around recruitment. To address this challenge the company embarked on a comprehensive review of staff and business structures. “An instrumental factor contributing to our resilience in the face of these challenges is our deeply ingrained family business culture, which places a central emphasis on the well-being and satisfaction of our staff members. Importantly, we’ve proactively invested in our team, recognising that their professional development and contentment are pivotal to our overall success.” Reinvesting profits back into the business has been another key strategy that has bolstered MiR’s ability to overcome obstacles. “This strategic reinvestment has allowed us to continually enhance our capabilities, diversify our service offerings, and remain adaptable in response to evolving industry dynamics.” Industrial and commercial refrigeration Marine air-conditioning and refrigeration Electrical and automation systems www.bigfridge.co.nz Admin@bigfridge.co.nz 09 430 0775
