Jigsaw Architects T T Kim Newth ARCHITECTURE Fusing creative design and professional technical practice with a considered and personal approach, Jigsaw Architects is a respected architectural consultancy with a strong track record in Tauranga and Mount Maunganui. Offering a full architectural service with integrated project management, Jigsaw Architects’ client base spans central and local government, commercial organisations, developers, contractors, private individuals and consultants. Jigsaw Architects’ commitment to Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) has been recognised in various award winning ESD projects. Working as partners with their clients, Jigsaw Architects pride themselves on being solution focussed and operating in an open and respectful way to achieve project excellence. Key long standing clients include Bay Radiology, Craigs Investment Partners and Comvita, all recently undertaking flagship projects with the practice. The 11-strong team, based in Jigsaw’s Tauranga office with one staff member working remotely, include technicians, graduates, designers and registered architects. “We have a very good spread of staff skills and experience,” says Director Jason Benton, who notes that all current staff are tertiary level qualified in architectural draughting or architectural design and share many decades of post-qualification experience. For some, design creativity is their number one passion, while others are more technically driven. “We all work well together and pride ourselves on putting out good comprehensive design and document packages.” “What we were also able to provide was cost efficiencies and we added value by providing flexible, dividable function spaces.” Jason started Jigsaw Architects in 2014 with Craig Henderson and Kyle Denize. All three have worked in the local design sector since the 1980s, with Jigsaw naturally evolving out of their combined experience. “While Craig has now retired as a director, he continues to be a valued part of the senior team. Lance Adolph, who has been with us since 2009, is now a director with Kyle and I.” Award winning projects include ‘Metal Jacket House’ that won a 2021 Waikato/Bay of Plenty Architecture Award. Showing what can be done using prefinished structural components, the clever design achieved a cost effective residential build along with a high level of spatial and textural richness. Another recent stand-out project for the team is the Papamoa Community Surf Rescue Base, designed as a landmark building to replace old facilities that were no longer fit for purpose. Designed for durability and to blend with the dune environment, the new base also serves modern surf club needs for lifeguard sightlines, equipment storage and emergency responsiveness support. “What we were also able to provide was cost efficiencies and we added value by providing flexible, dividable function spaces. This is a big win for the club.” Jason says Tauranga’s growth trajectory shows no sign of stopping. While there are growing pains - around transport connections, ageing infrastructure and a CBD downturn – he believes there is little to stand in the way of Tauranga Moana turning into a vibrant city. Currently awaiting resource consent is one of Jigsaw’s new projects: a higher density living solution delivering four new 375sqm townhouses. The project design and materials reflect the quality, established neighbourhood. Overlooking Memorial Park, the townhouse site is within walking distance of the city centre. “We are also currently working on a project with Bay Radiology for a new 2900m² medical imaging facility for Tauranga that will notably include Tauranga’s first PET CT scanner, providing significant improvement in local access to world class radiology. “This project also reflects how design is becoming a lot more interactive: multiple design teams are all working together on this project with BIM and cloud collaboration really coming into its own. We see the market starting to shift strongly in this direction.” Your Planning and Resource Management Solutions start here www.mpad.co.nz • 07 220 9812 or 027 432 5154 Proud to work with Jigsaw Architects Photos: Rose Minnee Photography
