T T to page 61 ARCHITECTURE The outcome is a varied yet consistent street frontage appropriate for the Hobsonville Point setting.” The development adapts to the rolling contour of the existing landform, having buildings step down the long street seamlessly. Madushin says this approach provides visual interest in the broad streetscape, optimises the earthworks on site and emphasises the natural environment in height and scale. The design concept for Te Uru Terraces takes inspiration from the pōwhiri. The ceremony serves as a symbolic act to remove the tapu (sacredness) from visitors, making them one with the tangata whenua (local people). Te Uru Terraces greets visitors with a traditional Māori pōwhiri along Hobsonville Point Road. The gradual process of two entities coming together, as symbolised by the pōwhiri, aligns poignantly with the site’s location and scale, effectively welcoming visitors into Hobsonville Point. Madushin says that two central elements of the pōwhiri, the karanga and hongi, significantly influence the architectural narrative. “The karanga, the fourth stage of the pōwhiri, represents a spiritual call from women to women through time, weaving a spiritual connection. This continuous spiritual call is abstracted into the undulating, repeating roof form pattern, visually echoing the karanga’s melody. “The hongi, signifying the meeting and merging of māori of both the tangata whenua and the manuhiri (visitors), finds symbolic representation in the roofs of each building, reaching out to meet in a gesture of traditional greeting.” Nebulite® AUCKLAND INSPIRING EXCELLENCE Nebulite™ offers you an unequalled range of window and door systems enabling you to find the ideal solution for your next project.
