Ink Architecture T T Kelly Deeks ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN With 19 years of first hand experience of the construction industry, Nick Timms of Ink Architecture in Cambridge applies extensive knowledge of building products and methodologies to his high-end residential new homes and renovations designs, and ensures cost-efficient, time-efficient results which don’t compromise on quality. Nick entered the construction industry straight out of school when he went to work as a roofer. It was out on the job site every day working on new homes that he first thought he’d like to end up designing them. He qualified in 2007 with a National Diploma in Architectural Technology from WINTEC, but after two years employed by a local award-winning architectural firm, he was made redundant due to the Global Financial Crisis. “I decided to get to know my product and I went to work as a timber merchant,” he says. “It helped me so much with what I do today. “I got to know tradies and builders, and I started to understand all the different types of timber you can get - the different grades, the different treatments, the different mouldings, and the costs associated with all. “There was a frame and truss plant there as well where I got to learn all the tricks of the trade about what trusses’ capabilities are and how they can be used to add cost-effective features to a build-able design.” On his way back to architecture, Nick worked as builder and a quantity surveyor, putting his newfound knowledge to practical use and gaining further understanding of costings and budgets. Today, Nick and his team at Ink Architecture are proud to produce drawings for clients, builders, and subcontractors that are highly buildable and beautiful, with budget at the forefront. A recent project demonstrates some of Ink Architecture’s skill in finding cost-effective solutions without compromising on design. In the style of a Californian bungalow, this creatively customised home oozes old world character and charm. It was only recently completed, but would have also been perfectly placed on its stunning rural section 100 years ago. “I got to know tradies and builders, and I started to understand all the different types of timber you can get.” Special detailing and modern methods have brought this character bungalow into the 21st century. Its insulated concrete floor slab increases the energy efficiency of the home and its cost-effective and modern aluminium joinery includes timber facings and planted sills to give the extra profile and thickness of timber joinery. Instead of traditional flat soffits, top chord rafter extensions add intricate and eye catching detail to the roofline and gives a nod to classic construction methods. This was a very labour intensive part of the build, but since Nick and the team designed this home for local builder Andrew Grey and his family, the builder was willing to put in the time to achieve this spectacular finish. Andrew built his home, showcasing his superior craftsmanship with meticulous detailing as well as custom cabinetry throughout. He was rewarded with the Builder’s Own Home category Gold award, a regional Gold award, and was named one of the Top 100 homes in the Registered Master Builders House of the Year 2023 competition.
