BUILDING A two-year renovation by Auckland’s Keith Hunter Builders Ltd has transformed a gracious Remuera residence to deliver a sensational lifestyle for the owners and their family. Working to a plan by ABRI Architects, the renovation is a perfect meld of period correct styling with modern comfort and functionality. This magnificent home, with its distinctive rooftop turret, has been a landmark property on Arney Road, Remuera since 1920. The original scale and vision is impressive. When the current owners purchased this iconic property it was in tidy condition but in need of a refresh. They turned to a company they knew they could rely on to achieve their renovation vision – Keith Hunter Builders. The couple had previously completed a renovation and extension project with Keith and Sonja Hunter. Their company has a leading reputation in the Auckland market for high end renovations and alterations, along with new builds. “This renovation is one of the biggest that we have been involved in and also one of the most rewarding,” says Keith. “The owners were absolutely delightful to work with. They had a good vision on the design side and were a pleasure to deal with throughout the whole process. We really appreciated working alongside ABRI Architects’ Director John Durkin and Project Lead Gabriella Chan too. We’ve worked with John for more than 30 years. The end result is a stunning property for the owners and their three daughters.” One of the project’s most challenging aspects came at the start, with the home’s top two floors having to be supported to enable excavations for new foundations and a new basement level. “We work with a specialist house lifting company – Auckland House Lifting – who know what they are doing and have all the right gear.” The new basement level includes a home gym and sauna, bathroom, offices, a family games room, an English-style bar with additional games room, all flowing to outdoor decking and a swimming pool. A central staircase links to the floors above, all tastefully updated for functional family living Heritage elements have been respected and there is period correct classic styling throughout. “The original front door has been kept and the staircase is all original too; it was stripped back to the original timber and re-stained. We retained all the kauri floors. “The middle level - their main living area – has wooden floors throughout that have all been restored and stained and we carried that theme to the top floor as well. “The interior has been enhanced by adding ceiling details, cornices and other bespoke fibrous plaster detail in keeping with this home’s grand character.” The exterior has been completely re-clad - with all joinery replaced top to bottom – but the finish is consistent with the home’s previous look . Engineered structural steel elements have been discreetly hidden away. “However, we did make a design feature of the steel in the home’s turret, which is now part of the master bedroom and looks absolutely stunning.” The mid-level includes formal lounge, wine cellar, laundry, garaging and a large kitchen/ dining/family area leading to wraparound decking that looks down onto the home’s gorgeous new swimming pool and pool house. On the top level are four bedrooms, two fully tiled bathrooms, plus the master with generous walk-in wardrobe and ensuite.
