86 | All going to plan in Kerikeri Apex Building has been kept busy in Kerikeri and beyond. Apex Building T T Sue Russell BUILDING “I had basically gone as far as I could in my last job being a team leader where I had done my apprenticeship and I thought by going out and starting my own business it was my way of improving myself,” says Dan Smallman, from Kerikeri-based Apex Building, when asked what the catalyst was to take that step. He says this is important as the business establishes to ensure the quality standards he sets are maintained no matter the size or budget of the project. Dan also says that living and working in Kerikeri is such a positive situation, with plenty of work on in the thriving centre and beyond. “We do most of our work right here but we have travelled as far as Kaitaia.” Among the team are three apprentices and a Gateway programme student from Kerikeri High School. Dan says the programme is full of positives for students who learn best in a hands-on situation. Dan is also happy with the size of the business and says his team leaders are first-class. Asked about how work has been going recently Dan says its been a very bouyant time, with four new spec houses completed in a local subdivision. Dan has a special interest in the whole issue of water-tightness, making it a priority to work in with designers and clients in the early stages of the design process to ensure the client gets the look they are after and the home is built in a practical water-tight way. Being versatile and nimble has contributed to the businesses track-record and success. “One thing I really enjoy is seeing the next generation of builders coming through...” Dan says they are happy to look at any project, big or small, new, renovations, maintenance and upgrades. “I am proud of our reputation and the fact that we put the same attention to detail and quality into every project, from a new deck being built, fencing, retaining walls through to whole house renovations and complete new builds.” It is also, he says, a great training ground for those new to building, with no two days th same. “One thing I really enjoy is seeing the next generation of builders coming through, having cut their teeth on a variety of projects and with the support of a great team helping them. I appreciated the learning I received when I first started building and its a way to pay back to the industry.” Working efficiently is a priority, regardless of the scope of the build. Dan says he has worked hard to ensure he has good systems in place and engages positively with clients and his team. Asked for plans ahead with the business Dan says he loves working in Northland, being part of a positive going forward community. Your Business, Your Industry, Your News.
