Adam and Celia Burke, the new owners of Fowler Homes Bay of Plenty, are on a mission to change the game for aspiring homeowners in the region. Taking over the reins in mid-2023, the Burkes bring a unique blend of experience and relatability to the table. Adam, with over 20 years in the building industry, and Celia, with her background in customer service and administration, form a dynamic team ready to tackle the housing needs of the Bay. “We want to change the game a little bit,” says Celia. “Our main point of difference is to work with everyone who is keen to get out of challenging rental situations, to find a way to get them into a brand new home that caters to their needs and most importantly their budget.” The Burkes’ approach is refreshingly downto-earth. Having recently built their own home in Tauranga, they understand first-hand the challenges faced by potential homeowners. This personal experience drives their commitment to guiding clients through every step of the building process. Celia stresses that Fowler Homes Bay of Plenty is challenging traditional notions of home design, promoting concepts like house and income setups that can help first-time buyers get a foot on the property ladder. “We believe everyone should have the chance to own their own home, and we want to work with them to achieve this. We’re looking at options that might be a bit outside of the square from what people were originally considering.” A joint-venture redevelopment project in Hamilton Central has transformed a dated 1990s’ apartment building into luxury inner-city living with breathtaking views, and just a few minutes’ walk from all the best amenities Hamilton has to offer. Ryan MacRae from RN MacRae Builders joined Jason and Ryan Linn from Cavity Clad Waikato and Bloc Developments respectively, Mark Davies from Kitchen FX, and a couple of silent investors on this extraordinary transformation project. With such a wide variety of expertise amongst the development team, these five apartments at 1 Palmerston Street have had the specialist treatment on several fronts, and the results speak for themselves. Originally a Mediterranean-style building, with Spanish curves on the rooftops and painted in tiered shades of yellow, this building offered the canny developer a shed-load of potential. “It’s such a good location,” Ryan says. “There are quite a few apartment buildings nearby and we really wanted these to stand out above the rest.” Every detail of this redevelopment has been carefully considered to create an atmosphere of opulence. Sleek and striking from the street, 1 Palmerston Street is now re-clad with Expanel aerated concrete panel and painted in clean, fresh, and timeless white, accented with black rooftops, balustrades, windows, and garage doors. The exterior has been modernised with its rounded roofs flattened off, and a tricky 45° angle on the end of apartment one has also been squared off, creating a more sizeable living area and bedroom. Internally, new double-glazed windows extend from floor to ceiling in the living areas, and new skylights bring in as much natural light as possible over the stairwells and living spaces. Four out of the five apartments have freshly waterproofed and generous rooftop balconies of about 40sqm, while apartment five has seamless flow from the living space to a stunning balcony with city and sunset views. The whole complex is newly fenced and set behind electronic gates. As well as double garaging, there is more secure off-street parking in front of each apartment. This fresh perspective is backed by the solid foundation of the Fowler Homes brand, which has been a trusted name in New Zealand since 1984. The company offers a range of services from custom design and build to turnkey packages, all with a focus on quality and client satisfaction. Chris Rapson, Celia’s father and a Director of Fowler Homes, brings additional expertise to the team. His experience as a Director and Trustee of several charitable causes underscores the company’s commitment to running a successful business while maintaining strong community ties. Celia says the timing couldn’t be better for potential homeowners to consider building. “Now is a great time to be thinking about building with Fowler Homes. We have the capacity to undertake several new contracts, and the steady downward movement in interest rates together with the stabilising of material pricing is all in the homeowner’s best interests.” She says what sets Fowler Homes Bay of Plenty apart is its ability to combine the resources of a group home builder with the personal touch of a bespoke builder. It offers competitive pricing thanks to national deals with suppliers, while ensuring each build receives individual attention. “We care about the contract we present, that it’s accurate, fixed, and no surprises. This commitment to transparency and client satisfaction is at the heart of our business model.” As the Bay of Plenty region continues to grow and evolve, Celia says that Fowler Homes Bay of Plenty stands ready to meet the changing needs of its community. With fresh energy, innovative ideas, and deep understanding of the local market, Adam and Celia aim to make a significant impact on the region’s housing landscape.
