It is an innovative building business, focusing on high-end, architecturally built houses, renovations, and even a church restoration. Fraser Roderick, a qualified builder and the company’s founder, leads and works alongside the team, which comprises other qualified carpenters and apprentices. His partner Jennifer Robinson takes care of the accounts and keeping the administrative tasks ticking along. They are really happy with the progress of the business, despite a noticeable slowing down in the market these past couple of years. With the move out to Te Kowhai a few years ago, the couple built their own home, using an innovation process of charring the accoya cladding, a technique called Shou sugi ban. The finish requires no maintenance or staining, making it sustainable and durable and it looks amazing. With such a stand-out build, word soon got around regarding the quality of the company’s work, resulting in further executive-style homes being built in the district. “We love living in this community, close to Hamilton and all its services but still feeling like a close-knit village. The children attend the local school, which is a great community in itself,” says Jen. And being the size it is means Fraser’s building skills are still very much engaged on a daily basis. This is a situation that suits the nature of projects Roderick Building takes on. Asked how busy work life is at the moment, Jen says the team are engaged in a largescale luxury renovation at Karapiro, south of Cambridge and, when Business North spoke with her late July, a unit in Cambridge had just been completed. “We’ve also been working on a project in Raglan, so there’s enough work to keep the team engaged, with plenty of variety and detailing that is great for the apprentice to be involved in.” Jen says that key to Roderick Building’s success has been the meticulous attention to detail Fraser puts into each and every project he takes on. “He has incredibly high standards of himself and imparts this expectation on the team, regardless of the scale and budget of the work. Fraser’s a very good leader,” says Jen. Another strength Jen says Fraser carries is the ability to build really good relationships with people in the local community, who value his honesty and loyalty. Roderick Building has undertaken builds in Auckland; however, the bulk of the work is closer to home, particularly in and around Cambridge, which has seen exceptional residential growth over the past few years. When a substantial old church was uprooted from its birthplace in the centre of Hamilton several years ago, to become Saints Café in Te Kowhai, Roderick Building was commissioned to undertake its transformation and upgrade. The beautifully preserved building, which has retained a real sense of its history, was an exceptional project to undertake. The iconic building stands proudly on Te Kowhai’s main road, and has become a popular destination for people to enjoy a bite to eat, surrounded by original stained-glass windows, polished wooden floors, a soaring pitched ceiling, and an extensive added al fresco dining area to one side. “We were delighted to have the opportunity to undertake revitalising this lovely old building which is now enjoying a new life.” As for the future, Jen says they will continue to be adaptable in line with their clients’ needs and market conditions. “For Fraser, he wants to be in control of the quality of the work and the best way for him to do that is to remain hands-on as much as possible.” waikato@edgeworx.co.nz Curin Contractors Ltd E S T 1 9 9 6 Start your building project off with professional excavation and ground preparation services.
