Superior Building “Within the residential work we pretty much do all the build, including foundation, plasterboard etc, and seldom sub sections out.” BUILDING Te Awamutu-based builder, Hamon McKay, having gained his building qualifications with a local builder, started working on his own back in 2004, initially in a partnership arrangement before employing more staff and going his own way. He has always kept the business small with today, a crew of four, and he is still actively on the tools two or three days a week. Asked about current builds, when Business North spoke with him late July, Hamon said they had enough work on with a couple of bigger projects and a sprinkling of smaller jobs. “I’m actually really happy about how the business is structured now. It’s easy to manage. My 2IC has been with me now a number of years, which is great. We are tidy, efficient and we just get the work done. I admit it’s sometimes hard to juggle working on site and dealing with the admin and planning side of work life. I’d rather be on-site most of the time,” Hamon says. A new apprentice has just been brought into the fold to help cope with workload, showing initiative by approaching Hamon about work opportunities. The rest of the team are all qualified, and Hamon says 99% of the work is residential – new builds, renovations or alterations. “Within the residential work we pretty much do all the build, including foundation, plasterboard etc, and seldom sub sections out. This often includes landscaping work like building retaining walls, pergolas and fences.” Hamon and the team are currently engaged on a spec build in a new Te Awamutu subdivision at the higher end of the spectrum, balanced with another project, a granny flat on an existing section, giving the apprentice plenty of great building experiences. “We also undertake repairs and maintenance for existing clients and their rental properties.” Unlike many operating in the residential build space Hamon says he is very busy, with sufficient work secured through the rest of this year. Asked where most of the building activity takes place, Hamon says he and the team concentrate on the Waipa district, but also have clients in Otorohanga and the south side of Hamilton. “There are a number of subdivisions opening up and because we can take care of the whole build process we’re in a good position to capture new builds in these spaces.” The plan is to not get much bigger than their current size. Hamon says this suits him and means he is in the best position to remain in control of the quality of work they produce, and keep their good reputation intact. In these uncertain times it is easier to have enough work programmed to keep the team busy. “That’s always the risk if you take on more guys or gals. You need to know you’ve got enough work moving forward for some time or it just becomes a real stress.” An example of their work is a home positioned on Picquet Hill in Te Awamutu. Commanding a beautiful view on an elevated section, the home moves from one level to two at the back. Feature cladding is Euroclad Selekta and Eldorado Stone, and the home is 263sqm with four bedrooms, including a downstairs studio. Great use has been made of positioning the substantial home on a site bordered by three other sections. Inside the main entrance the stone cladding has been extended from the exterior to great effect, while the interior design projects a feeling of cool sophistication, precise angles to define spaces and plenty of opportunities to socialise or find quieter spaces. Clever use of the under-balcony area has been made with the addition of a spa pool, and the home has been sited to offer a good measure of privacy from neighbours. “We enjoyed the build for its points of difference coming from unique claddings, sloping site and basement structure, and completed it in late 2022.” Hamon says, given the uncertainties surrounding the residential build sector at this time, he is more than happy with the demand for their services.“I think having no limitations and doing all types of residential building work as well as the landscaping and construction, works really well, especially with new subdivision opportunities.” P. 021 023 28322 E. info@jrcelectrical.co.nz W. www.jrcelectrical.co.nz YOUR TRUSTED ELECTRICIAN RESIDENTIAL • NEW BUILD • COMMERCIAL SERVICING TE AWAMUTU, CAMBRIDGE AND WIDER WAIKATO Custom Kitchen & Cabinetry Specialists Proudly supporting Superior Building Bryan, Chris and the team are proud to support Superior Building and wish them every success.
