Dreamspace Tiny Homes BUILDING Eastern Bay of Plenty construction firm Dreamspace Tiny Homes has been busy despite the recession, with building projects outside of its core business as word gets around about this talented and passionate team. Started in 2018 by former technology and design teacher Ali Scott, Dreamspace Tiny Homes built Ali’s tiny home and another two for clients before word spread that a capable team was available for small building projects. “We have been inundated with work,” Ali says. “We’ve built a whole bunch of garage conversions into fully self-contained units, loads of decks, fences, and retaining walls, shop fit-outs and apartment fit-outs, and we’ve just started to fit out a huge 40x25m shed for a new medical marijuana venture at Manawahe.” Key for the deeply compassionate Ali is the fact he is employing four people, keeping them in work, and helping them to stay fed and housed. “That has become my focus,” he says. “I’ve got a heart for helping people out, that’s my thing. We don’t even charge our clients a lot of money. I just want to help them out with what they need.” Ali became disillusioned with the education sector when his recommendations for supporting disadvantaged kids were disregarded, and as a woodworking teacher and qualified architectural draughtsman, he decided to return to his passion for carpentry and is now pretty happy in his work. “There is the responsibility of having these guys working for me. I have to be on the ball and making sure there is work for them to do.” That hasn’t been a problem even through the recession, as the small projects are still happening and Dreamspace Tiny Homes has the dream team to handle them. Whether building tiny homes or small construction projects, Dreamspace Tiny Homes has a strong focus on timber, and recycling wherever possible. “We love to make timber a feature. I’ve always loved timber grain and the character it brings to every project. We can do a lot more finishing touches with timber and it’s so versatile. Even if you’ve got white walls, a bit of timber trim really makes them pop.” Timber has played a big role in the custom construction of Dreamspace Tiny Homes’ tiny homes, each of which have been designed and built differently from the last. Ali’s own tiny home has a huge amount of recycled timber on the cupboard and drawer faces, the floor, and the ceiling under the loft. The next tiny home had classic white walls with a whole lot of recycled timber detailing, and a brand new cypress tongue and groove ceiling. “The smell of that timber is amazing,” Ali says. The third tiny home had a quirky design with orange window and door frames. Dreamspace Tiny Homes originally completed just the tiny home shell and has since been back to add a timber ceiling, with the owner continuing to work on his own tiny home. Ali is looking forward to the upcoming Tiny House Expo in Auckland in October, where he will join an ever-expanding network of tiny homes experts to breathe some new life into the tiny homes market and provide inspiration to thousands of tiny-curious Kiwis.
