130 | The Raglan build, at the new Rangitahi subdivision, was designed to take in amazing harbour views. GV Homes BUILDING It’s been a good year for Whatawhata residential building business GV Homes. The firm owned and operated by Hayden Gamble and Matt Vickers, was recognised this year at the Master Builders Awards, taking out Gold and Regional Category Winner for a Raglan build valued between $500 - $750k and for another residential project in Ngahinapouri, just south-west of Hamilton which received a Gold award. “You never know how your projects will be received by the judges so we were delighted to have this recognition from within the industry,” says Hayden. The Raglan build, at the new Rangitahi subdivision, was designed to take in amazing harbour views from both indoors and outside. At 189sqm, the home has been positioned perfectly to set off both the sea and mountains. The simple, yet quite stunning form, based around twin-gabled spaces separated by a low-pitched link, includes a long open-plan living area with raked ceiling, with beautiful black kitchen, opening out to a covered deck. Stepping down from the deck a spa pool offers another place to chill out and enjoy the view. Of the four bedrooms (or three plus media room) two have sliders connecting indoor to outdoor and views beyond. Constructed in dark vertical cladding and grey corrugate, the house sits comfortably in its surrounds in this relatively new and rapidly growing subdivision in Raglan. “We were delighted to be named Regional Category Winners in our section for this home. It’s been really well designed and is beautifully appointed and was a pleasure to build.” Along with new builds, renovations occupy the bulk of GV Homes’ ongoing work, something Hayden says is great for the apprentices, as they hone a different set of skills working in this domain. Working with Hayden and Matt are a team of three builders, one apprentice, and an administration support person. “We did have a couple more staff but have settled on this size as it works well in the current market climate.” Hayden’s key responsibilities daily revolve around business development and quoting jobs, while Matt normally takes care of overseing project management and organising activity on site. T T Richard Loader Hayden says he and Matt would consider growing the company, but only organically and as demand dictates. “We do a lot of custom design and build which is really satisfying work as we see the project right through from start to finish and build long term relationships with our clients.” GV Homes works closely with an established architect and normal practice is for Hayden and the architect to meet on site right at the start of a project, while its still in ‘forming’ stage in terms of design options. “This arrangement works very well as I can suggest to the architect what will work best in terms of the site.”, “We’ve nearly finished a build in Te Mata, close to Raglan and have another one in Whatawhata which we are half-way through. We also have another build in East Street, Raglan and a substantial architectural build in Taupo that is programmed to get underway at the start of next year.” Sitting behind this current work are a few houses in design phase. Hayden says its common to have two projects, at various stages of build, on the go at any one time and several in planning phase. Hayden says he and Matt are fairly optomistic about the market continuing to warm up over ensuing months.
