Kauri Point Construction BUILDING In the face of recent economic headwinds, one Auckland-based construction company has found the recipe for success. Kauri Point Construction, founded in 2021 by Simon Cattley, has navigated the choppy waters of economic slowdown with agility and foresight. “Staying nimble, diversifying and having a great reputation has kept us in a good position,” says Simon. With 15 years of experience under his belt, Simon has seen his fair share of industry ups and downs, but the recent economic climate has presented unique challenges. The construction sector has faced a double-edged sword in recent years. There was the economic slowdown, and the subsequent burgeoning rebound has created new hurdles. “Now there’s a jam at the consenting stage as people are building again,” Simon explains, highlighting the complexities of the current market. Kauri Point Construction’s success, no matter what the state of the market, can be attributed to its strategic approach. Initially targeting the renovation sector in Auckland, the firm has since expanded its portfolio to include new medium-density housing projects, demonstrating the kind of diversification that has become crucial. “We like to get involved in projects early, it’s where we can offer most value and build a trusted relationship with clients,” says Simon outlining the company’s philosophy. This approach has paid dividends, with most of their work now coming through word-of-mouth referrals. He says the company’s commitment to quality and professionalism sets it apart in a crowded field. “We understand it’s a big commitment to choose a builder and put your life savings into a house. “We don’t take that responsibility lightly. This customer-centric approach, coupled with a focus on transparency and communication, has been key to building strong client relationships.” Simon takes particular pride in his team’s ability to handle complex renovation projects. “We love the problem-solving aspect of renovations. It gives our team a chance to really showcase their skills and craftsmanship,” he says. This emphasis on craftsmanship is not just talk – Simon, trained by a high-level craftsman himself, ensures that these skills are passed down to his apprentices through a robust training programme. He says the company’s success is deeply rooted in a culture of excellence and continuous improvement. With a team of four staff, including Simon himself, who remains handson, Kauri Point Construction operates with a lean and efficient structure. “We all bring individual skills and strengths to the team; there are no challenges we can’t overcome,” Simon says, indicating the collaborative spirit that drives the company forward. Kauri Point Construction is also committed to sustainable practices and community engagement. The company actively looks for opportunities to contribute to local community projects and emphasises recycling and environmentally friendly practices in its operations. The business is a member of The Building Hub, a New Zealand business dedicated to inspiring and supporting New Zealand building practitioners for a better building industry. Kauri Point Construction’s portfolio is bursting. Current projects include an extensive home renovation in Ellerslie involving extensions on both sides, and internal renovations, as well as two, double-storey townhouse new builds in the same suburb. The pipeline looks equally promising with upcoming projects including another extension and renovation in Mt Eden and a full interior refit in the same area.
