This move was designed to not only secure the company’s future, but also to serve their long-standing clients—many of whom are now retiring and seeking properties outside of Auckland. Barfoot & Thompson Bay of Plenty Area Manager Kevin Coppins said with thousands of new homes currently in development in the wider Tauranga region - and approximately 46% of properties in Mount Maunganui/Papamoa owned by Aucklanders, either as beach houses or homes - the Bay of Plenty presented a prime opportunity for Barfoot & Thompson to expand its presence. The company has identified several growth hotspots within the Bay of Plenty, including Papamoa and Tauriko. These developments, along with the economic impact of the Port of Tauranga, are fuelling growth in the region, making it an attractive market for Barfoot & Thompson’s expansion. “The past ten months has been a period of rapid growth for the company,” Kevin said. “In the Bay of Plenty there are large volumes of land under development, and supporting infrastructure such as shopping centres and other retail developments being built.” The company’s expansion strategy has been multi-faceted: in October 2023, Barfoot & Thompson appointed Louise Findlater as the Branch Manager of their existing Cherrywood branch in Tauranga, previously focused primarily on property management. Concurrently the company acquired Claridge’s, a real estate business in Omokoroa, rebranding it as a Barfoot & Thompson branch with Brent Dodonski stepping in as Branch Manager. Barfoot & Thompson has also taken over the successful sales team of another real estate company in Waihi Beach, establishing a brand-new branch and securing an existing clientele base, and additionally opened a new branch in the booming area of Mount Maunganui. Louise now manages both the Cherrywood and Mount Maunganui branches, while Brent manages the Omokoroa and Waihi Beach branches. To support these new operations, a regional office was set up on Spring Street in Tauranga, with Kevin managing the daily business operations. In addition to expanding into the Bay of Plenty, Barfoot & Thompson has recently broadened its reach into Northland, and also acquired Whangamata Real Estate. Barfoot & Thompson is a family business built on relationships. At the business’ core is the desire to support clients through various stages of their property journey, from helping young individuals buy their first homes to assisting retirees in finding the perfect retirement property. And unlike large corporate entities, it prides itself on being both professional and relatable - a trait demonstrated by company owners Peter Thompson and Steven Barfoot. This expansion strategy demonstrates their commitment to growth while staying true to their values of fostering long-term relationships.
