Northland: Northern Pipe and Civil T T Virginia Wright “Whangārei’s water network is not immune to the infrastructure challenges facing other parts of the country but we’re replacing all the crucial areas here and it’ll help keep maintenance costs down and aid water quality as well.” REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Established in 2020 Northern Pipe and Civil Ltd. services the water industries in and around Whangārei. Its owner BJ Stanton, had been in the industry for a number of years, working for a variety of companies and gaining a solid reputation, before deciding to go out on his own. Northern Pipe and Civil contract across the full range of civil construction but their main focus is on Whangārei’s water network. Together with Northern Drainage Ltd. they offer the complete Three Waters package. Within that Northern Drainage specialise in drainage and stormwater while Northern Pipe and Civil concentrate on drinking water. “So we’re a one stop shop for new builds and subdivisions,” says BJ. Currently there is a multi-year water pipe renewal plan in place to keep on top of aging drinking infrastructure in Whangārei and BJ’s confident that the water network is improving and will continue to improve under this plan. “Whangarei’s water network is not immune to the infrastructure challenges facing other parts of the country but we’re replacing all the crucial areas here and it’ll help keep maintenance costs down and aid water quality as well.” says BJ. Where the water mains network has been upgraded the water runs through new polyethylene pipes rather than asbestos or cast-iron pipes which are being prioritised for replacement. For Northern Pipe and Civil it’s about delivering the best results for the water network itself, to a high standard, as they do their part to establish and maintain the broader service network the Whangārei community relies on; whether it’s water, power, gas, or using the data provided by their fibre connection. Staying local is important to BJ. He employs 10 staff through Northern Pipe and Civil and always goes local when it comes to sub-contractors, knowing that it works both ways when he stays loyal to companies like Caine Contracting Limited who do all their directional drilling and hydro excavation. “They’re crucial because we have to keep the existing network live when we put the new one in to make sure everyone’s still got water. “Having solid relationships with all our sub-contractors is important to me. We look after each other with pricing too which means we’re more competitive to win jobs, and this money stays in the community,” explains BJ. BJ’s support of all things local spills over into his community in other ways too. Northern Pipe and Civil sponsor the Whangārei Heads’ Pines Golf Course where he and fellow workers play; and with four young, sports-mad boys at Parua Bay School all playing for Manaia there’s likely to be plenty of sponsorship opportunities coming their way. We deliver a great project, on time, and on budget! Proudly supporting Northern Pipe&Civil
