T T Hugh de Lacy “No day or load is the same as the previous one, and what needs to be transported is generally big, heavy and often of an awkward shape.” Antares Transport Ltd TRANSPORT The transport needs of the country’s biggest piling company, Kumeu-based CLL Ltd, had grown so significantly that it made business sense to start its own trucking division, Antares Transport. CLL owns and operates throughout New Zealand a large inventory of piling and ground stabilisation machinery operated by 280 staff. From its small beginnings in 1986, CLL contracted out most of its transport requirements. That had to change, and long-time CLL Senior Manager Alan Marychurch took on the job of setting up Antares Transport as a wholly-owned CLL subsidiary. CLL was started up as a fencing and landscaping company by Terry Donnelly – still CLL’s Executive Chairman – and has grown by providing innovative and cost-effective solutions for ever-bigger projects to be a leading nationwide player in piling and ground improvement, while retaining the ability to service all sectors of the market. A large project that CLL is currently leading is the restoration of the road through the Mangamuka Gorge, south of Kaitaia, which was wiped out in the 2020 storms. There was much debate within CLL over a name for the new transport division. Having named the plant and operations division Antares Hire after a picture on the wall behind Terry’s desk of the star Antares, the brightest in the constellation of Scorpius, it was common sense to use the same name for the transport division. Antares, and Antares Transport have enjoyed stellar growth since the latter’s launch in 2021 with just two four-wheel tipper trucks and an eight-wheel Isuzu with a Hiab sourced from CLL’s fleet. “The first additional truck we bought was an old Kenworth 401,” Alan says. “We started building the fleet up from there, and we’ve now got five tractor units all with 40-ft flat or low-bed trailers, plus a couple of six-wheel flat-deck delivery trucks, and a 10-wheel DAF with a Hiab.” Such rapid growth during the current economic uncertainty was driven by CLL’s transport requirements, although Antares Transport is now widening its specialised offering to the contracting and construction markets. Antares Transport is bringing a new tenwheel Scania truck with a heavy-weight FASSI Hiab into service at the end of September 2024. This has increased its capacity to service both CCL and the wider market’s need for a large-capacity truck-mounted crane that can be used on sites. Alan, with his extensive experience in heavy equipment and contracting, has built an experienced team of operators and truck-drivers to service both CLL and the wider market. The team is now being led by lifetime trucker Jerry Kukutai who is well-known and respected in the transport industry for getting the job done effectively.
