As signs of life begin to return to the industries it services, Penrose-based delivery company CV Compton Ltd is eyeing expansion into Northland, and into the lower end of the North Island. The 43-year-old company sports a staff of more than 150 through its four divisions, with 50 trucks servicing the construction industries in particular, and its biggest client being Winstone Wallboards. CV Compton already has a presence in Northland with one truck each based in Kaitaia and Waipapa, the former mostly involved in container transport and the latter serving the Bunnings store there as well as smaller jobs on the side. “We’re looking to increase our offering in Northland and also eyeing a couple of opportunities in the lower North Island ,” Group Sales Manager Matt Moir says. “Our core work distributing Gib-board for Winstone Wallboards has reduced significantly in the current economic climate, and isn’t yet showing many signs of recovery, but we’re certainly seeing the first green shoots in the other industries we service. “We’ve also got a strong presence in the Hamilton with ten to 15 staff and a fleet of trucks. “Things are starting to happen,” he says. CV Compton comprises three subsidiaries besides the core transport and delivery service, with Unite Logistics being virtually a stand-alone company serving the construction, civil construction and infrastructure industries, On-Site Mechanics offering mechanical services, and Workforce Solutions sourcing staff mostly for construction and transport companies. There are a further two divisions within CV Compton itself, General Cartage and Heavy Haulage, with most of the general cartage trucks being Isuzus and Scanias while Heavy Haulage is served by Kenworth and Scania units. The company avoided the labour issues in the wake of Covid, and Matt puts that down to the strategy of recruiting young staff and giving them the opportunities to move up the transport scale, from driving small Class One trucks running metro deliveries to the big Class Five units transporting heavy machinery. The clients of the General Cartage, Hiab and curtain-sider divisions include building merchants in Auckland, Northland and Hamilton, along with a number of key suppliers to the construction and infrastructure industries, with the distribution contract for Winstone Wallboards comprising over half the business. The Heavy Haulage division, with its transporters and load pilots, transports heaving equipment for leasing and hire firms, civil construction, demolition and forestry companies. Many of the staff are from Auckland’s Pacifica community, and they stayed loyal to the company when others were struggling to recruit and retain workers. CV Compton was formed 43 years ago by the late Brian Compton who named it after his wife, Colleen Valerie Compton. Brian launched it as an owner-driver transport company with his son Brent, securing the core wallboard distribution contract with Winstone’s that set it on its current expansion path. he company is now run by the second generation of Comptons, brothers Tom and Brent and sister Jodi, with the third generation also represented. 4X4 FORKLIFT FIND OUT MORE AVAILABLE NOW!
