| 73 COSCO Shipping Lines (New Zealand) Ltd TRANSPORT T T Lindy Andrews Playing a key role in China-NZ trade COSCO has been providing a significant connection between New Zealand and China for more than 35 years, COSCO Shipping Lines has been recognised as a finalist in the 2024 New Zealand China Trade Association (NZCTA) China Business Awards. Sponsored by Yili Group, the awards celebrate outstanding performance, innovation, and collaboration in the New Zealand-China trade relationships. COSCO Shipping Lines’ general manager, Mark Scott, says being recognised as a finalist brings not only prestige and recognition, but also opens doors to new opportunities for networking, collaboration, and growth. “For COSCO Shipping Lines to be nominated as a finalist in the NZ-China Relationship Category was a huge honour for our team here in New Zealand and in China,” says Mark. COSCO has been providing a significant connection between New Zealand and China for more than 35 years, continually increasing both the capacity and scope of its services. “The company’s proactive commitment to the demands of trade between the two countries has been instrumental to strong growth,” says Mark. “We estimate COSCO Shipping Lines has moved over three million TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) between the two countries over those years. “Direct and tranship options from a wide range of origins and destinations in New Zealand and China have provided the necessary service range to achieve that.” Whilst COSCO services to and from New Zealand offer significant other global connections, the China-New Zealand relationship has always been a major part of the cargo mix. Consistent growth in import/export volumes has provided a valuable platform on which to build its services. As a result, COSCO is a critical part of this country’s supply chain. Mark says COSCO will continue to look to expand capacity in line with market demand. “This is also dependent on New Zealand port and supply chain capacity, and the ability to provide efficient and economic serving of the tonnage committed to this trade.” Globally, the COSCO Shipping fleet is seeing strong expansion, with many new vessel builds incorporating the latest developments in green technology. That growth seems set to continue well into the future, with COSCO continually exploring new opportunities. “Over the past year we have added a dedicated New Zealand -Australia service, which has added a valuable connection in this important market.” Dairy exports to China continue to be a valuable part of COSCO’s commodity mix, with strong growth over many years. As well as dairy products, COSCO has a wide range of commodities, which always see fluctuating volumes. Horticulture volumes continue to experience good growth, with chilled and refrigerated volumes currently performing exceptionally well. “A varied commodity range provides good consistency in utilising space across our services, which all operate on a weekly basis year-round,” Mark explains. “One of the key strengths of New Zealand trade is its relatively balanced inbound and outbound trade volumes, with retail goods and building materials dominating import tonnages.” Following a few difficult years for New Zealand’s supply chain, Mark says its vital that COSCO Shipping Lines continues to improve the accuracy and consistency of its service offerings. “That means maximising the use of resources we currently have deployed, whilst always looking for additional opportunities as the market develops.” CentrePort – the port of choice for Central New Zealand CentrePort proudly supports Cosco Shipping Lines ʶ˂ˁˇʴʶˇ ˈˆ ˁ˂ˊ ˜ˡ˙ˢʳˤ˨˕˘ʡ˖ˢʡˡ˭ ˪˪˪ʡˤ˨˕˘ʡ˖ˢʡˡ˭ ʣʧ ʬʤʦ ʦʣʦʣ ŜŠƦƦŠſŕ ljƉſƺĕŠſĿƩ ƩĿƦĕŠƩư ĕſĸ žĕŠſƺĿſĕſljĿ 48%( /2*,67,&6 /7' 1(: =($/$1' ˄˨˕˘ ˣ˥ˢ˨˗˟ˬ ˦˨ˣˣˢ˥˧˦ ʶ˂ˆʶ˂ ˆʻʼ˃˃ʼˁʺ ʿ˜ˡ˘˦ ʿ˧˗ ˜ˡ ˣ˟˔ˬ˜ˡ˚ ˔ ˩˜˧˔˟ ˥ˢ˟˘ ˜ˡ ˖ˢˡˡ˘˖˧˜ˡ˚ ˁ˘˪ ˍ˘˔˟˔ˡ˗Ϡ˦ ˘˫ˣˢ˥˧˦ ˧ˢ ˧˛˘ ˪ˢ˥˟˗ʡ ĿŔƩŠŕĿƩĕƺĿĸ ĿſŕŠſĿĿƩŠſŕ ưĿƩǚŠljĿư !ƉſƺĕŠſĿƩ ƺƩĕſưƦƉƩƺ ĕſĸ ǛĕƩĿŜƉǀưŠſŕ lP ĕƦƦƩƉǚĿĸ ĸĿljƉſƺĕžŠſĕƺŠƉſ ĕſĸ ǛĕưŜ ¨ƩĕſưƦƉƩƺ ưĿƩǚŠljĿư 0žƦƺǡ ljƉſƺĕŠſĿƩ ưƺƉƩĕŕĿ
