| 93 T T Virginia Wright Adding beauty to regional landscape Lindholm Design embraces the challenge of designing homes and renovations unique to the owner’s individuality. ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN Lindholm Design Architectural designer Karin Lindholm has a background in residential, commercial and educational architecture both in NZ and overseas with more than 25 years of experience in draughting and design. She is a professional member of ADNZ (Architectural Designers of New Zealand) and a licensed building practitioner (LBP) in Design 2. Karin started Lindholm Design when she moved to Kerikeri in 2001. “I arrived to find a small town brimming with potential but little employment and no job for someone with my technical background and CAD (Computer-aided Design) experience,” explains Karin. With the support of friends and local businesses, she slowly built-up design and drafting work locally while continuing to work remotely for the company she was with in the UK until she had enough work coming in to just focus her work in Northland. “Northland businesses look out for one another and support each other when we can”. Karin found it challenging but rewarding to grow her business in Northland. “The aspects that are so beautiful, appealing and unique, also create obstacles for architecture and building here,” she says. “The area is large geographically , with significant areas in outstanding landscapes zones and many important cultural and heritage sites. It has sensitive coastal marine environments, multiple different soil types and a population as spread out and as diverse as the landscape, with vastly different cultural values and economic realities,” says Karin. “The aspects that are so beautiful, appealing and unique, also create obstacles for architecture and building here.” It’s by embracing the challenge of designing homes and renovations unique to the owner’s individuality, from ‘tiny’ simple houses to large, sophisticated dwellings that Karin has successfully built Lindholm Design to where it is now. When designing houses Karin keeps the wider environment in mind. “Designs that try and reflect the special people and environment we are lucky to have here and aiming to bring something more than the traditional standard, brick and tile stye, to the region, hopefully creating a quality of architecture the region deserves. Whoever the client.” Karin is clear-eyed about the region she’s lived in for the last 20 plus years. “Northland is still full of potential but, like a lot of smaller NZ and towns and regions, that potential is largely unrealised. “Growth is ad hoc and sporadic, limited by lack of funding, lack of infrastructure, uncertainty of changing government policies and the very real physical isolation of an unreliable and outdated transport system.” Like many others in Northland she hopes that the proposed highway to Whangarei will become a reality and bring more opportunities to the Far North feeding back into communities to help them thrive. In the meantime Lindholm Design continues to do its part in adding to the beauty of Northland in all its diversity. 2 Homestead Rd Kerikeri Ph 407 1135 - Next to REPCO Proud supplier of Lindholm Design www.tilewarehouse.co.nz Laminate Floors Wallpaper Carpet Timber Floor Vinyl Blinds Curtains www.guthriebowron.co.nz Now all under one roof 09 407 5979 info@graniteheaven.co.nz www.graniteheaven.co.nz Benchtops.
