With this now giving way to a continued flow of private and public development, the workload looks set to hold for a while longer. Marine and civil structure engineering, design, and management specialist Shore- wise Engineering Consultants works with a wide range of clients and most of the marine contractors in New Zealand, and is looking at expanding to meet this demand. “Part of the testament to what we do is our repeat business and recommendations,” says Shorewise managing director Rob Brown. “We operate in the specialised marine structure development space, and we have projects happening across the country and in Australia.” Shorewise designs and manages construc- tion of marinas, wharves, and associated structures, including concept and feasibility, resource consent, tendering, project manage- ment, and managing and monitoring construc- tion. Rob is a chartered professional civil and structural engineer who has specialised in maritime engineering for 11 years and comes from an early background in designing and building boats. He started Shorewise two years ago with one project, the design and project manage- ment for the exciting new Okara Marina at Whangārei. “This is a very exciting project that is really going to regenerate the area,” Rob says. The Okara Marina is set to transform an intertidal mangrove area into an international boating destination, with a large reclamation, 120 berth marina, and marina facilities. The development is set to provide the space needed to berth a large number of interna- tional boats which are currently being turned away due to lack of space. This project has been technically challenging due to the site’s geotechnical challenges and its proximity to a four lane highway. Meanwhile at Port Whangārei Marine centre, Shorewise is providing the structural design for runways and approach ramps for a new 560 ton travel lift, with detailed design works including support piles, sheet piled seawall, and pile supported approach ramps. Construction is now underway . Karen Phelps At Port Nikau, Shorewise has provided the site investigation and design for a new floating berth for superyachts up to 60m, design for a new 20m vessel berth, and seawall reinforcing next to the Port Nikau offices. Rob has also worked with Port Nikau to gain resource consent for a new 140 berth marina and is now assisting with rolling out the first stage of that development. Soon to open in Whangārei is the new Whangārei District Council Town Basin Park, an important link between the waterfront, the central city, and the Huarahi o te Whai Hātea loop walkway. Shorewise has already developed a new boardwallk system for the park and is now working towards the installation of a number of new floating pontoons to replace all of the old structures adjacent to the park. These are but a few of the many and varied projects currently underway at Shorewise. Rob and the team proud to provide high quality, efficient, engineering, design, and project management services to deliver the best out- comes for all stakeholders.
