A powerful sense of community with Ker- ikeri and Warkworth respectively, and as Northlanders, pervades the offices and staff of the 40-year-old civil and structural engineering firm Haigh Workman. It’s a company that, among other things, “takes greenfields sites through all the pro- cesses of sub-division right through to helping individual owners build their houses,” manag- ing director John Papesch says. “We’re a locally-owned business and we feel very much a part of the community that’s growing and developing around us, and to which we’re contributing.” That sense of local identity goes back to the firm’s founder, Bill Haigh, who formed Haigh Consultants in 1980 to service the extensive Ministry of Works water-supply and infra- structure projects that were cranking up the Kerikeri and Northland horticulture industries. At the turn of the millennium Bill was in expansion mode, and hired Phil Workman for his structural engineering experience, going into partnership with him five years later as Haigh Workman. Bill retired in 2013 and Phil in 2019. Today the company is owned and run by John Papesch, based at Kerikeri with 20 staff, and John McLaren with 10 at the Warkworth office, and turns over in the vicinity of $4 million a year. With Bill Haigh’s involvement in government irrigation schemes long since completed, Haigh Workman’s focus has turned to sub-divi- sion and infrastructure which comprise most of the 8000 projects the firm has completed since 1994. Haigh Workman brings extensive resources to these projects, with the civil workload alone covering land development, geotechnical, stormwater, wastewater, earthworks, roading and traffic controls. The company guides its clients through everything from site selection and feasibility, and the resource consent process, to engi- neering design, geotechnical and flood assess- ments, traffic studies, construction contracts and on-going project management. The structural side of the business covers the design of buildings – residential, commer- cial and industrial – bridges, marine facilities, construction monitoring, earthquake risk assessment, 3D modelling, retaining walls and pre-purchase advice. The firm’s environmental services cover HAIL reports, contaminated land, erosion and sediment control, flooding and overland flow, on-site wastewater treatment and disposal, and stormwater management solutions. Both branches of the firm are carrying heavy workloads, with a typical project being the $130 million Arvida Retirement Home, in Kerikeri, for the publicly listed company of that name. Haigh Workman is guiding it through the development process while handling the civil, structural, environmental and geotechnical engineering aspects of the project that will eventually boast 200 residential villas, a 72-bed care facility, a clubhouse and a wellness centre.
