Local company Burton Construction & Main- tenance Limited has been on site since late June working to increase the number of toilets and showers in each of the changing rooms as well as improve accessibility for users. The geothermal heating under the seats within the rooms will also be reinstated. The construction period for the refurbished chang- ing rooms is expected to take about 12 weeks. Rotorua Lakes Council’s Deputy Chief Exec- utive of Community Wellbeing Jocelyn Mikaere says this next step will help to complete the enhancements for the outdoor 50 metre pool area. “The upgrade of the 50 metre pool was successful and feedback about the new space has been really positive, so we’re keeping the momentum going and this next project will really improve the experience for people using the pool.” The upgrade to the 50-metre outdoor pool was the first part of the wider redevelopment project and reopened to the public in March. Naylor Love was the lead contractor on that part of the redevelopment and Baywood Construction completed the decking. Prior to commencement geotechnical testing was un- dertaken to check the strength of the ground around the pool. Other testing included resistivity, ground-penetrating radar and bore-hole testing and an in-depth investigation into the centre’s roof conditions including reviews of mechanical strength of metal and wooden structures, corrosion, weather-tightness and ventilation.
