Since 2018 this has seen Waiotahi Contrac- tors import 425,000 tonnes of material from local quarries to build the stopbanks. Since its foundation in 1957 Waiotahi Con- tractors has evolved into a major player in the civil, quarrying and transport sectors across the wider Bay of Plenty region. With its head office, based in Whakatane, the company operates depots from three oth- er key areas: Opotiki, Kawerau and Tauranga. Waiotahi Contractors services the upper North Island in transport, roading and infra- structure. The company owns and manages two hard rock and two alluvial quarries to supply the civil works projects it takes on as well as private clients. An extensive fleet of trucks operate from its branches and carts a wide range of products, from aggregate to roading sites, stock feed to farmers and the transportation of kiwifruit and other horticultural produce. A sheetpiling division came on board in 2012 when the company bought a Movax SP 60F sheetpiling system. This specialist piece of equipment combines a mounted pile driver and an excavator. Hardus says it brings several benefits in- cluding access to small sites, efficient one-per- son operation, saving on labour costs and less impact on the environment where the piling is taking place. The sheetpiling division also carries a large stock of sheetpiles available for purchase or for hire. Hardus says the region is currently ex- tremely busy with plenty of projects under- way. Waiotahi Contractors is about to start work on a 17,000 cubic metre cut and fill project for Sequal Lumber and in November will start work on a 1.7km road from Tarawera Road to Paora Street in Kawerau allowing Sequal Lum- ber to access its facility without needing to use State Highway 34. Bulk earthworks, roading, sealing and drainage works will be part of the project. “Every project we do stands out as we strive to deliver the best projects possible on behalf of our clients. “Listening to the needs and requirements of our clients and working in with them allows us to produce the high quality of work we deliver within the Eastern Bay of Plenty, making our region better and safer for all to enjoy.”
