It’s been a huge part of our success,” he says. Formed in 2007 by Clare and Tony Davies-Colley, BDX has rapidly grown to become a major force, working from Auckland north. The company initially established itself as one of the largest suppliers of maintenance fitters to industrial sites around Northland. In 2018 the civil construction division was added to deliver these works to large residential development projects that the Davies-Colleys were involved in after they identified a limited supply of companies offering subdivision civil construction services in Northland. Through this expansion a need arose for the company to establish a mechanic division, firstly to service its own equipment but this quickly grew to offering services to outside customers. Today the three distinct divisions – engineering (which also includes an industrial maintenance service), civil construction and mechanics – are all busy working on various projects around the region. The civil construction division employs a team of around 12 and works on large resi- dential and commercial subdivisions around Northland. It also offers services to select niche markets including cell phone tower pro- jects, which see it cutting in roads and building concrete pad foundations for the towers. Major projects the civil construction division are involved in are Kotata Rise and Port Nikau, major subdivisions spearheaded by the Davies-Colleys. Port Nikau represents 100 hectares of freehold development in central Whangārei and is uniquely positioned out into Whangārei Harbour to create genuine waterfront living and harbourside opportunities for businesses and residents. It will encompass hundreds of homes and a waterfront precinct including commercial spaces and a marina. “It will be an exciting new area of Whangārei and we’ll be working on it for the next decade. The initial phase of residential construction is in planning,” says Hamish. It also started a new service for BDX, which is now a local expert in wick draining. The company has designed a ‘wicking machine’ used to prepare the ground on Port Nikau for future development and that is now being used on projects for other clients. The machine inserted up to 400 plus, 14m long wicks per day across Port Nikau’s site of reclaimed land to induce settlement and com- pact the earth through water extraction. The BDX engineering division is likewise working on some significant projects including at Ohakea Air Force Base and the City Rail Link project. to page 10
