92 | BUILDING Anderson Homes BOP Good communication is the key Sue Russell Creating the ideal dining and kitchen space takes careful planning and an eye for detail. D aniel Anderson, founder of Anderson Homes (BOP) Ltd, says that the real effects of COVID for the building sector are really only beginning to be felt a year later. “The material shortage and ongoing increas- es in the cost of materials is certainly putting a strain on builders and I can feel there’s a real sense of unease beginning to impact the sector,” Daniel says. Asked how he has coped with these ongo- ing stresses and uncertainties Daniel says it comes down to having good communication with clients from the outset. “They understand we are doing the best we can. Lead-in times for ordering materials has extended out markedly but we have found that as long as we factor this in as much as we can from the outset and communicate well, then the work proceeds as positively as it can.” Since establishing in 2015 with Daniel and one other on board, the company has grown in measured steps, with a mix of employed builders and contract staff. Today, Anderson Homes (BOP) Ltd has six permanent staff and undertakes a mix of private full contract work and house and land packages. It’s a mix Daniel says works well, given the demand for housing in the Bay of Plenty. A home recently completed and sold on Hanlow Place, Pyes Pa, was all about creating a really modern, sharp, look. The Abode weatherboard cladding used on the exterior was also used for a feature wall in the entry foyer. Raking whitewash ply ceilings with negative detail to the open plan kitchen, living and dining rooms and the use of black fixtures and fittings throughout the house really completed the look we were after. Daniel is still actively involved on the tools and looks after project managing and organ- ising new work, so each day is about finding space for each of those key responsibilities. “I think its important to be on site with the team and to be part of the construction process, especially when you have apprentices with you. “We have two at the moment along with two qualified carpenters. At this stage I don’t really want to grow much bigger.” Working on large-scale projects, is some- thing Daniel takes in his stride now, having been given the opportunity to build the Copper Crest Retirement Village very early on in the history of the company. When Business North spoke with Daniel in July the team was engaged in building a home on a wonderful site in Whakatane, on Pacific Parade. “The site looks pretty much straight out at Whale Island. We’re enjoying getting out of busy Tauranga. The build is going really well having taken some time to work through Council and engineering processes. Work began in April and we’re just getting the gib on now.” When Covid caused a stoppage in work Daniel took the opportunity to evolve their building administration systems. Looking back, the benefits from the time spent on this are significant. “We saw it as an opportunity to do some business process improvement. Fine-tuning how we manage the various work flows. “After a lot of research, we’ve adopted a new building management software system which has saved me time and money.” Proud To Supply Anderson Homes Bay of Plenty Top Worx offers bespoke and quality benchtop solutions for all our clients.
