With the official opening of the Te Arai Links South Course due on October 1, golf industry veteran Jim Rohrstaff, who is one of the people leading the Te Arai Links development, says the buzz is palpable. “The excitement level is through the roof. Our members and guests who have seen the site are blown away by the beauty and scale of the project,” he says. Designed by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore, two of the world’s pre-eminent golf course designers, the land - sand dunes and landforms sculpted by the wind, adjacent to the sea - has determined the design and character of the course. It is the first Coore and Crenshaw project in New Zealand and has sixteen ocean view golf holes and eight holes bordering directly on the sea. The development will also include accommodation. Forty-eight suites have been completed and underway are 19 two-bedroom cottages and six four-bedroom villas. The first clubhouse is finished, which includes a golf shop, concierge service, locker rooms and casual restaurant Ric’s. Designed by Studio John Irving the restaurant building is positioned to give views across the 18th fairway and the ocean beyond.
