It’s seen it work on numerous local projects such as the development at 83 Boundary Road in Papakura, “We had worked for local structural engineering company George Grant Engineering for many years,” explains Hill Design Engineering director Peter Hill. “We designed their original buildings so when the company owner’s sons branched out into development work we were pleased to help.” The project saw Hill Design Engineering complete a design of the subdivision and infrastructure for the 1.7ha site, including new road access and detailed design for six industrial buildings. The brown fields site was previously used for various light industrial activities and needed to be cleared and parts of the land underwent significant remediation. The site was divided into six lots, each with its own free hold title, with lot six being an access lot to service each site. Hill Design Engineering employed specialist consultants to prepare the resource and subdivision applications with Hill Design Engineering providing the design for earthworks, silt and sediment control for the site formation and building construction, stormwater quality treatment, detention, and retention systems, public sewer and stormwater reticulation design, public access way design and power, water and telecom reticulation. “Having been in business so long, Hill Design Engineering has long standing successful working relationships with numerous partner contractors. This has helped create a proven track record for efficiently coordinating the efforts of associated contractors in projects such as this,” explains Peter. Hill Design Engineering also provided the industrial building design and consents including the architectural and structural design for the five industrial buildings with a total building area of 6964 m². This includes the single storey steel portal frame factory structures, down shop gantries provided to each to each factory, precast concrete panels to the boundary walls, foundation types include strip and pad reinforced concrete and driven timber piles, single storey and two storey offices using the concrete speedfloor first floor construction method and passive fire-resistant rating design for all buildings One particular challenge of this projects was that Hays Stream was on the south boundary of the site. “All the runoff from driveways and yards had to go into a treatment system. Volume control was put in place so no flooding downstream was caused by the property including large in ground retention tanks to control the flow of run off from the site,” explains Peter. Hill Design Engineering carried out observation of all stage of construction, including installation of the stormwater treatment, detention and retention systems, public sewer and stormwater reticulation system, construction of foundations including driven timber piles, manufacture and erection of the precast concrete panel walls, assembly of the structural steel portal frames and installation of the down shop girders and gantries. It was also responsible for final building inspections and issuing PS4: Construction Observation producer statements and preparation of an operation and maintenance manual for the stormwater treatment, detention and retention systems. “From the raw state of the site to fully developed with all the building consents and subdivision signed off is what we find particularly satisfying about these kinds of jobs.
