He says creating JMAC was the best thing he has done and the culmination of his building industry career journey, which has contributed to JMAC being an award-winning firm. A love of design saw Jason undertake his architectural drafting qualification at polytechnic in the late 80s with one lecturer dubbing him ‘super MAC’: “I guess he thought I had potential,” says Jason with a smile. Jason’s career led him into the surveying field doing land development design work, eventually rising to general manager with lead design directive for a couple of large land development companies. The role included international exposure to urban design principles. Then the global recession hit and in 2008 he decided to complete a diploma in construction management and his LBP for architectural design, setting up JMAC architecture in 2009. His multi award-winning studio specialises in bespoke residential design across the Bay of Plenty but also completes projects further afield as well. “I wanted to work for myself and pursue my true passion for being able to create beautiful homes,” says Jason who considers his previous industry career has given a good multidisciplinary tone to JMAC’s projects. Jason, Professional ADNZ (Architectural Designers New Zealand) member, Licensed Building Practitioner, and previous Chairman of ADNZ Bay of Plenty Board, is passionate about driving innovation and excellence within the industry. He says joining ADNZ in 2011 was a critical component of the successful business. “A professional organisation such as ADNZ provides a lot of support to a sole practitioner around running a small business. There is the collaborative aspect of likeminded designers and the well respected award programme helped to get the business brand out there.” Jason says he has strong values around how JMAC operates with everything focused on people and a firm embrace of industry collaboration to deliver the best outcomes for clients. This includes communicating and understanding people (what the client wants) to developing strong trusted connections to underpin a project. “We aim to bring good positive professional energy to each project and client as this allows them to have a sense of calm throughout the process. It’s a large investment and clients are trusting us to deliver what they want and we take that responsibility very seriously. This means being as authentic– being accountable, solution focused and delivering the best value and outcome as creatively as possible.” Based in Mount Maunganui, JMAC now employs a design team comprising three full time staff and a design contractor. It has won multiple awards for its design work becoming known as the ‘small giants’ of architecture. “We’re tenacious leaders in our field but we also care deeply about each other, our values and our projects. The scale of the firm is small but the scale of the projects we complete can be large. In terms of awards we certainly punch well above our weight.” One of the latest accolades is a project in Muricata Avenue that was a national finalist in the 2020 ADNZ award for residential interiors. Designed for a discerning client, the project is a refined result of meticulous and innovative design, masterful craftsmanship and an absolute refusal to compromise on quality. The house has been described as more than a home but rather a work of art. Jason says the project is a good demonstration of the collaborative approach that JMAC takes, drawing on the expertise of a solid team of professionals alongside its own highly skilled team to deliver exceptional results. Because for JMAC design is all about people and passion colliding to produce beautiful spaces for people to live, work and play that demand attention for all the right reasons.
