68 | INTERIORS Impact Interiors & Construction Boutique fit-out firmmaking its mark Karen Phelps Impact Interiors & Construction offers a boutique interior fit-out service ranging from offices, commercial and education to medical, hospitality and retail projects. Auckland company Impact Interiors & Construction has quadrupled its turnover and increased staff numbers from five to 20 in the past six years by focusing on quality and relationships, says one of the directors Jason Burt. Jason, a quantity surveyor, and fellow director Dan Bearman, a project manager, purchased the company (established in 2002) after working in the industry for a competitor. At the time it was a small company with a good reputation and the pair have since continued this and grown it significantly. Impact Interiors & Construction offers a boutique interior fit-out service ranging from offices, commercial and education to medical, hospitality and retail projects. Typically it operates as the main contractor working for designers, property managers and project management firms. Jason says that one of the key things Impact Interiors & Construction does differently is it has its own builders on staff. In addition four of the builders have been with the company for over ten years. “There is a lot of experience in our team and having our own builders enables us to manage the quality on site. We also have two truck drivers to make sure the sites are tidy as that’s important. We believe the main point of difference between our competitors and us is our people. This enables us to maintain extremely high levels of quality and deliver jobs seamlessly on time and on budget.” Impact Interiors & Construction works for a niche group of clients. Jason says that by focusing on a small group of clients this also helps to deliver the quality results the company is known for. It names the likes of Apple, Kiwibank, Trademe, UBS Bank, Kiwi Property Group and Auckland Council amongst its client list. Jason says this also safeguarded Impact Interiors & Construction during the pandemic as the business remained busy. Jason and Dan are also hands on with each project with Jason focusing on the financial and pricing aspects and Dan running the building side of the projects. “Any of our clients can call either of us and we can assist. That’s why we really like the size we’re at – we can offer a really personal service with close relationships with clients.” Recent projects include Meredith Connell’s new office in the city. The 6000sqm fitout spans two levels and was completed in a tight 16-week programme. T he project saw Impact Interiors & Construction building the fitout alongside building owner Manson TCLM’s base build contractors. Designed by Jasmax, the interior resembles a slice of the Waitakere Ranges in the city including forest and birdsong. Intricate acoustic details saw Impact Interiors & Construction work closely with Agile the acoustic engineers. The extensive plantings meant dust management was also an important part of the project. A major challenge was a four-week lockdown three weeks out from project handover. “We had to down tools on site across three floor plates then ramp the project back up again while still trying to maintain the programme for the client,” says Jason. Another recently completed project is the fitout for KiwiRail’s 4500sqm head office. Over four separate floor plates with a tight programme and budget, the project saw Impact Interiors & Construction working alongside designer 4WoRK. The project involved a refurbishment of the interior lobby space working in conjunction with the building landlord and tenants and landlord in the building, including re-tiling and changing internal façade. There was also exterior works including building a new outdoor staff area.
