86 | Callavate Builders BUILDING Small family company making waves Kelly Deeks Callavate is proud of how its builds stand out in the Lakeside development, with unique design features. Waikato residential development business Callavate is a true family affair, with the Young family putting its time off the farm to good use and developing quality turnkey house and land options for the local community. Callavate started in 2017 when Metrapanel marketing manager Sheena Young was liaising with Te Kauwhata’s Aparangi retirement village. The village was keen to reap the benefits of using the engineered construction panel system on its builds, but it still needed some help designing, building, and selling homes. “Aparangi Village clients would engage builders to build their new homes on sections they had bought, but the village still needed a solution for building their duplex units,” Sheena says. “We’re fortunate that my husband Matt’s cousin, Shane, is an amazing builder so we put a proposal together and it was accepted. Shane’s brother’s best friend Matt Fox/MBF Projects, also a builder came to build for us too, Matt’s brother completes all of our earthworks, and my two brothers provide cartage, materials, and landscaping. We’ve also worked with the same local contractors for the past five years, and they have become family too. We are a real family business, and we’re excited to be helping our community grow.” By 2019, Callavate had built 14 homes at Aparangi Village, then moved on to building dream homes for private clients. When friends sold their farm on the edge of Lake Waikare to Australasian developer Winton, which is creating a new 1650 lot subdivision– Lakeside– Callavate saw the opportunity to get involved in the development of the thriving new community in a great location, less than an hour to both Auckland and Hamilton. “It’s ironic that only a few years ago, Matt would walk the farm with his mate looking at cows, now he’s looking at houses!” Callavate’s first two builds at Lakeside were investment properties for clients. “It was the first time these two had had their own investment, so we guided them through the whole process from choosing their sections, keeping them updated on the build each month, then selling the houses for them in a record timeframe last year. We reached the top sales dollars at Lakeside so far, and we’re proud of how our houses stand out in the development with their unique design features.” When Kāinga Ora decided to buy more than 1300 sections at Lakeside, Callavate was one of eight build partners chosen to help meet current and future demand, with more of the right types of homes in the right places. “We were pretty chuffed to be selected out of 24 applications, considering we’re a small, new company,” Sheena says. “We pride ourselves on being the local company at Lakeside, and we want to maintain our reputation amongst the people who buy the homes we develop in the town we call home. Our kids are going to be going to school together, we’ll be involved in sports teams together, and we want to be proud of the relationships and the homes we’ve created.” Callavate has five homes to develop at Lakeside, two affordable and three premium homes on the lakefront which include EV charging stations. With the backing of Metrapanel, these homes will go up quickly, with no gib or timber framing required. Sheena and Matt are excited to bring these premium and affordable homes to the people who need them.
