POOL INDUSTRY A ‘cool story’ was the background to starting a business and becoming an authorised independent dealer for self-cleaning Compass Pools, Central Pools director Steffan Hudson says. Headquartered in Tauranga and operating across Bay of Plenty, Waikato, and Coromandel, Central Pools is a family business run by Mike and Steffan Hudson and their theoretically retired father, Ray Hudson, a builder by trade. The company installs conventional pools, plunge pools, spas and immersion therapy pods, and pools for exercise, water therapy, sports training, and fitness, and is an authorised installer for Compass Pools New Zealand. Steffan owns a marketing consultancy business and in 2010 started working with Compass Pools New Zealand. His role included providing sales training to its dealer network, which meant acquiring in-depth product knowledge. He subsequently also took on this role for Compass Pools Australia in New South Wales, the location of its head office and manufacturing facility. Over time, Steffan became highly impressed with Compass Pools products and culture, and the company’s New Zealand owners suggested he should consider establishing an outlet in Tauranga. With the synergy of Ray building architecturally designed homes, Steffan’s marketing experience, and Mike’s experience as an operations manager for a furniture and appliance rental company, the stage was set to launch Central Pools in 2013. The workload soon increased so much, it was not viable for Ray to remain building, so he transitioned his building team into the new business, Steffan says. “Compass Pools are unlike any other company I’ve come across in terms of their dedication to their products, their commitment to innovation – they have some of the best technology in the world. Their innovation is next level when it comes to fibreglass swimming pools.” In addition to being self-cleaning, Compass Pools are considerably cheaper to heat, use fewer chemicals, and come with internationally industry-leading guarantees. “We want people to really love owning a swimming pool, not just in the first couple of years, but 10 years later to have a pool that is problem free, that would clean itself and really provides resort style living at home without all of the common headaches.” For the water in a pool to remain healthy, it must be regularly circulated, and must maintain the right chemical balance and sanitation levels. However, in a conventional pool the circulation is limited to the upper level, and this requires the owner to manually scoop leaves and debris, test the water quality and lug around a cleaning robot, which is where a Compass Pool differs considerably. “We take dirty water out of the bottom of the pool as well as through the [surface] skimmer. The water is treated and returned using a series of in-floor jets that push the freshly filtered water along the floor, up the walls, and they create a complete circulation and at the same time they sweep any leaves and debris down to the drain in the bottom corner,” Steffan explains. All that is needed to keep a Compass Pool clean is to empty the easily accessed skimmer basket, and with the greater circulation, fewer chemicals and greatly enhanced heating, comes considerable savings. Compass Pools also differ significantly in their construction, due to the fibreglass laminate having a ceramic core. This protects it from osmotic damage, which occurs when water penetrates the fibreglass structure and is often seen as blisters on a pool’s surface. The ceramic core also adds strength, something that was strongly evident following the Christchurch earthquakes when no Compass Pools suffered catastrophic damage. A further innovation is Compass Pools’ trademarked Bi-luminite colouring process, which enhances their appearance in addition to keeping them looking like new for longer, due to increased ultra-violet and chemical protection. Central Pools’ range can be installed in or above ground, with a full consultation and design process offered as part of the overall installation. Home of the self-cleaning pool.
