CONSTRUCTION Auckland Abrasive Blasting & Coatings has earned its reputation by working on some of New Zealand's most significant developments from major airports to bridges, protecting steel structures that form the backbone of the country's infrastructure. The 100% New Zealand-owned company has been involved in an impressive portfolio of landmark projects and names D&H Steel as one of its more important clients. “We have worked on a lot of projects with D&H Steel such as Auckland Airport developments, universities and the Kopu Bridge in Thames,” explains Dhinesh Narayan, project manager at Auckland Abrasive Blasting & Coatings. “We also worked with D&H Steel in the Christchurch rebuild on various joint ventures too.” The company's expertise extends across diverse sectors with recent major contracts including the RNZAF’s New Te Whare Toroa Hangar/Office development in Palmerston North, New Taranaki Base Hospital and the Waikato Regional Theatre in Hamilton. On these projects it provided all intumescent fireproof coatings and corrosion protection on structural steel. “On time delivery was crucial on these projects and we are proud we delivered on time and on budget,” says Dhinesh. “We operate around the clock when required to meet project deadlines.” Operating from industrial premises in Wiri, Manukau, the company boasts facilities designed to handle large-scale projects. Its workshop features two large industrial-sized blasting booths capable of accommodating substantial structures from oil field equipment to tanks and vessels. The company recently commissioned a new specially designed hot zinc arc spray booth which handles all its hot zinc/aluminium metal spray applications. Dhinesh says this process enables application on almost every structural component from bridge beams to oil and gas services, water and wastewater care and severe marine components, where the asset protection life to first maintenance is prolonged to over 25 to 30 years. The company also has mobile abrasive blasting/painting teams providing professional coating services at any location nationwide. Dhinesh says this flexibility is important for major infrastructure projects where on-site application is essential. With a team of over 50 highly trained staff, including certified AMPP/NACE CIP L2 coatings and intumescent coatings inspectors with over 30 years of industry experience, Auckland Abrasive Blasting & Coatings maintains strict quality control systems across all operations in accordance with AS/NZS 2312:1:12014 standards. “We put a lot of emphasis on the quality of our services,” says Dhinesh. “Constant investment in health and safety, plant and procedures is an important part of this.” The company's history stretches back 50 years, originally known as Mt Wellington Metallisation under Robt Stone Co Ltd, providing corrosion control solutions across New Zealand and the Pacific region including Australia, Papua New Guinea and various Pacific islands. Its specialist services encompass hot zinc/aluminium arc spray applications, heavy-duty industrial protective coatings, intumescent/passive fire protection systems and marine coatings. The expertise in severe micro-environment protection has made Auckland Abrasive Blasting & Coatings particularly valuable for challenging projects in harsh conditions. Other notable latest projects in the company's portfolio include the upgrade of Watercare odour fibreglass duct lids, new jet fuel pipeline rehabilitations at the Auckland Airport, Waterview Tunnel fire deluge pipes, Westfield Newmarket, Kopu Bridge and Lion Breweries' Project Century, alongside its ongoing work supporting major construction firms on university developments and infrastructure projects.
