Now operating 55 trucks and employing 60 staff, the Penrose-based company is run by the fourth and fifth generation of the family, who are as passionate about its culture and values as Albert Tutill, who established it in 1921, was. Reflecting this culture, Tutill Carriers’ modern fleet acknowledges this long legacy, the front of its trucks still bearing Albert’s original signage ‘A.J Tutill & Sons’. Today’s management team at Tutill Carriers comprises John Tutill and his sons, general manager Jack, and transport manager Bryn. “We are very proud of the family legacy,” Jack says. “Life was always about trucks for us, and naturally as a kid you’re into wheels and anything that can move. We were always surrounded by it; it becomes entrenched in you and you just end up enjoying it.” Tutill Carriers’ location in Penrose, and the sprawl of the city around it over the years, has influenced the nature of its operations as a transport, storage and logistics hub. “We were in the city up until 1996, and then we moved to Penrose where we are today,” says Jack. “We are very central, still, to our key customers around Auckland, and because our company’s based on service, it means we can be reactive to anything around Auckland. We are always half an hour from the furthest destination in Auckland.” Consequently, Tutill Carriers’ speciality is direct deliveries that do not pass through its depot, with a guarantee of same-day delivery within the Auckland metro area for bookings received by 10am. It can also collect from air and sea freight stations throughout Auckland, and handles over- dimensional loads, and dangerous and sensitive goods. Tutill Carriers’ versatile fleet includes 18 Hiab cranes ranging from four- to eight-wheelers with front- and rear-mounted cranes, with flat deck truck services available across Auckland and throughout the North Island. “In the last 12 years we’ve grown a lot with our Hiab trucks and flat deck trucks, providing to the construction industry. A lot of our clients will use all of our services, so anything from a Hiab truck, which can deliver materials to construction sites, and also delivers pallets on a flat deck or curtain-sider,” says Jack. Tutill Carriers has two adjacent, fully secure, monitored warehouses for the storage of goods on behalf of customers. This service is ideal for those who have container loads of products imported, but do not have their own storage – Tutill Carriers can then deliver the products over time as needed. “We de-van containers from overseas here, which generates cartage, so that’s been a cool part of the business over the last 10 years.” The company has an MPI-approved transitional facility (ATF), where various-sized containers can be unpacked by accredited staff members, who can safely unload them according to biosecurity requirements. Despite the company’s strong links to the construction industry, its diversity and overall customer base has insulated it from the downturn in recent years, Jack says. “We have over 300 customers a month that we do work for. I give credit to Dad and everyone before me for that, for having a good spread of clientele. We are doing alright.” Not resting on its laurels, the company has employed business development manager Ollie Pringle, who has come up through the ranks, in order to be proactive in promoting the business and what it offers. “I think service and staying connected with our clients and doing the little things right like culture in the business, keeping the drivers happy, retention of the drivers, are key,” says Jack.
