74 | Health and Safety a top priority Deverni now operates a fleet of four hydro trucks, and has recently launched a CCTV division. CONTRACTING Deverni T T Kelly Deeks Launched in the wake of Covid-19, civil services company Deverni has marked a period of rapid growth, expanding its fleet, developing new services, and delivering high-quality work on major infrastructure projects across the North Island. The business was initially developed by John Oliver, who spent years refining the concept before partnering with Bindi Ground and Greg Desmond to formally establish the company. John brought decades of drilling and industry experience, while Bindi and Greg contributed valuable insights and expertise from outside the sector, creating a well-rounded leadership team with strong technical and business acumen. In 2021, Lani Hayes helped prepare the original business case for Deverni, alongside John, before stepping away temporarily after receiving a university scholarship. She completed a Bachelor of Business, majoring in law and finance, before going on to earn a Master of Business Management. Lani rejoined Deverni full-time at the end of 2023 as Health & Safety manager, leading the company’s progress towards qualifying for the New Zealand Health & Safety certification, Totika. Since then, she has advanced through the ranks and now holds the position of executive manager, with responsibilities spanning development, Health & Safety, HR, governance, and project management. “Even though we launched during a challenging time, we knew there was a gap in the market for a high-quality service backed by a real commitment to Health & Safety,” Lani says. “That vision continues to guide us today.” From its humble beginnings with a single hydro excavation truck, Deverni now operates a fleet of four hydro trucks, and has recently launched a CCTV division. Deverni completed its first major project-management contract on the Tawariki Street portion of Watercare’s Central Interceptor project in 2022, an impressive achievement for a young company. Since then, it has delivered projects for GHD, and is preparing to undertake the Eastbourne Sampling Project, which involves traffic management, reinstatement, hydro excavation, and project management. The company is now a trusted provider of hydro excavation services for Downer, Counties Energy, CSL, and McMillan Drilling, and continues to build its reputation for efficiency, professionalism, and safety. Worksites are kept clean and tidy, advanced equipment is used to minimise environmental impact, and safety remains the top priority. “Clean, tidy, simple, proficient – that’s how we operate,” Lani says. “We’re proudly New Zealand owned and operated, and committed to delivering exceptional service.” Earlier this year, Deverni joined Civil Contractors New Zealand (CCNZ) as part of its wider development strategy. While the initial focus was on supporting business growth, Lani was encouraged to see other women in management present at CCNZ events, which inspired her further. “It was great to see CCNZ championing women in civil, while also keeping the focus on skills and capability,” she says. “That balance is really important.” Diversity and inclusion remain key priorities for Deverni. “We don’t care what you look like or where you come from,” Lani says. “If you’ve got the right skills and attitude, we’ll give you a chance. Growth doesn’t come from doing things the same way they’ve always been done.” With a clear vision, committed leadership, and a growing track record of delivering results, Deverni is poised to continue making a real difference in New Zealand’s civil infrastructure sector.
