80 | New owners transform concrete supplier Waikato Ready Mix is now making a positive impact on the local Hamilton market, and has an enviable reputation for quality service and quality concrete. Waikato Ready Mix T T Kim Newth CONTRACTING Waikato Ready Mix has deep roots going back over 20 years in the region. Under new local ownership since late 2023, the company has stepped up another level as a leading local supplier of high-quality, ready-mix concrete solutions for residential, commercial and civil infrastructure projects. Proactive investment targeting growth to support local needs means that Waikato Ready Mix is now making a positive impact on the local Hamilton market, and has an enviable reputation for quality service and quality concrete. “We have upgraded the plant to make it as competitive as possible, transforming it from what was a manual operation to fully digital with increased supply capability,” explains director Tom Love, one of the owners, whose background is in construction. He is also the owner of Waikato building firm Wolfpack Construction. “Every batch coming out of our refurbished concrete plant is well made and tailored to the unique needs of each project. We get so much positive feedback from our customers saying how much they love working with our concrete,” says Tom. Under the ownership of Tom and two other local businessmen, the modern fleet of concrete trucks has also grown from eight to 12, supported by a fully redeveloped wash-down area. Water resources are recycled to ensure the site runs as sustainably as possible. Today, Waikato Ready Mix is a proud local employer with an 18-strong team that includes drivers, lab tech, mix engineer and batchers, bringing considerable technical expertise to the concrete business. Every mix is engineered and designed to be fit for purpose. Regular testing ensures any issues are quickly detected and rectified. “We’re a New Zealand certified and audited plant, and supply concrete to meet any project requirement,” Tom says. “To achieve that certification, we have to do a certain amount of testing per year, depending on volume. It’s an assurance of quality concrete across the full range of projects we deliver.” With its focus firmly in the local area, Waikato Ready Mix delivers concrete wherever it’s needed in the region – whether for big infrastructure ventures or small-scale projects like patios, paths and driveways. “We won’t turn away people who turn up in the afternoon wanting a small amount of concrete for their home project,” says Tom. “We do a lot at that end of the market as well as larger jobs.” At commercial scale, Waikato Ready Mix has proven capability. For example, a recent project involved delivering concrete for a large, six-storey apartment block in Cook Street, Hamilton. Waikato Ready Mix has forged strong, local working relationships, including with reputable local suppliers, such as Winstone Aggregates, Highgate Trust (sand) and Golden Bay (cement). The latter is already producing the lowest-carbon cement in New Zealand. Over coming months, Waikato Ready Mix will also be further upgrading its plant to supply tailored low-carbon concrete solutions in line with engineers’ specifications. The company is a 2025 jersey sponsor for Te Rapa Rugby Sports Club, and supports local in other ways too, such as opening its doors at Riverlea to young engineers and other groups wanting to learn more about modern concrete-making and testing processes.
