MANUFACTURING Okuma NZ Okuma New Zealand, a wholly owned subsidiary of Okuma Corporation of Japan, is helping shape the future of manufacturing across the country with worldclass CNC machine tools, automation systems, and lifetime service support. With facilities in Auckland and Christchurch, the company works with manufacturers nationwide, providing world-class technology that delivers productivity gains accurately and with longevity. Founded in Japan, and now operating through 39 regional offices worldwide, Okuma is a global company with a shared philosophy of Monozukuri – the art of making things better. Okuma NZ specialises in the supply and installation of highly productive Okuma CNC lathes, machining centres, five-axis vertical machining centres, multi-tasking machines, cylindrical grinders, and double-column machining centres for a broad range of manufacturing and production purposes. “When customers come to us, they’re not looking for a mid- or lower-tier solution,” says Okuma NZ Manager, Karl Medley. “They’re looking for that next step in productivity and performance that gives them the greatest return on investment and that’s where Okuma delivers. Whether it’s a smaller precision shop looking for accuracy, or a largescale manufacturer focused on throughput, we deliver machines that exceed expectations for decades.” Okuma is a machine tool supplier known for the rigidity and longevity of its machines, says Karl. “Some of our customers are still running Okuma machines from the late 1970s and ’80s and they’re still going strong and accurately.” Okuma Corporation offers a comprehensive range of loading and unloading solutions, including overhead gantry loaders (OGL) and Okuma CNC machines like Armroid and Standroid. In addition, the company offers automation systems, such as bar feeders and advanced factory controls, powered by Okuma’s proprietary OSP control system, a unique in-house advantage since the company began designing its own controls in 1963. “It’s fairly unique in a sector where many machine tool builders may rely on a third-party controls system,” says Karl. “It makes us a true one-solution provider. As the life of the machine goes on, we can service all aspects: mechanical, electrical or controls.” Okuma NZ offers a complete service model from delivery to installation and commissioning, backed by training programmes and a lifetime service and spare parts policy. An example of Okuma NZ’s impact in New Zealand is its long-standing partnership with Taradale Production Engineers, a CNC engineering and precision manufacturing company. “They have several Okuma machine tools they use for their manufacturing needs and they’re a longstanding customer,” says Karl. “For them, uptime is critical. Our machines provide the rigidity and accuracy they need to keep production flowing smoothly. That quality is one of the biggest drivers of their business success.” Installations remain steady across the country, from small workshops to large factories, including a recent installation of a double-column machining centre in Dunedin. Last financial year, the company successfully delivered a significant number of machines across New Zealand, marking a steadily strengthening presence and performance in the market. Okuma’s domestic market share in Japan, one of the world’s most competitive manufacturing landscapes, is over 50%, indicative of the company’s reputation for reliability and performance. • NEW ZEALAND’S TECHNICAL CUTTING TOOLS DISTRIBUTOR • SPECIALISTS IN DORMER PRAMET, SANDVIK COROMANT, SPEED TIGER AND CERATIZIT • EXTENSIVE NZ STOCK-HOLDING OF ALL OUR CLASS LEADING BRANDS • AVAILABLE NZ WIDE DIRECT & THROUGH LEADING DISTRIBUTORS 9/18 Taurus Place, Bromley, Chch | 03 338 4169 | admin@southerncut.co.nz 709 Te Rapa Road, Te Rapa, Hamilton 07 834 4090 kennardshire.co.nz
