Detailed topographical survey data was needed of the 16 proposed shaft sites running along this line and the two link lines extending the drainage into the Blockhouse Bay and Mt Albert areas. The digital survey data, positioned in relation to legal boundaries, was collated by Lands and Survey and has enabled the Ghella Abergeldie Joint Venture (GA-JV) engineering and design teams to finalise shaft design and begin construction. The Lands and Survey team is also installing the overall survey control network to ensure the GA-JV team can accurately position and construct each of 16 shafts in relation to each other to allow the lines to be connected once tunnel boring starts. The control marks, including permanent pillars at the shaft sites, have been coordinated using GPS, Robotic Total Station and precise levelling techniques. The completed control network covers the entire length of the Central Interceptor line with a project-wide accuracy of under 5mm horizontally and 2mm vertically. With qualified planners and surveyors (engineering, construction and licensed cadastral), Lands and Survey cover a broad range of work types providing surveying and planning services for construction and urban development right from the initial feasibility through to completion, including the issue of titles for the subdivision of properties. This involves the topographical surveys, scheme plans, Resource Consent applications, engineering-survey to support construction, as-builts for certifications and Land Transfer surveys. “We’re the experts in what the project will do but not in how to build it, so it’s a matter of working with the joint venture collaboratively, each contrib- uting our various areas of expertise.” “We also work closely with the stakeholders and community to ensure they understand what we are doing and to get feedback.” In July, the Central Interceptor’s dedicated train- ing centre was officially opened, along with a rep- lica TBM, which is being used for training purposes by tunnel workers. Shayne says that the centre provides an immer- sive experience and is the first of its kind in New Zealand: “The days of using powerpoint presenta- tions for safety inductions are over. This training centre gives our staff and contractors the chance to get practical experience before they’re on site deal- ing with the risks that come with the job. “Outside we have all sorts of equipment enabling our team to prepare for different scenarios, includ- ing pipes and manholes for rescue training, scaffold mock-ups and kits for simulating a chemical spill.” Every staff member connected with the project undergoes a two-day training course at the centre. Anyone involved in tunnelling has further training related to changing the TBM’s cutterheads and entering the machine’s decompression chamber.
