Prime Pump’s General Manager, Glenn Powell, says the company has worked hard behind the scenes at major New Zealand’s projects. Among them, Transmission Gully, the Moa Point sewer interceptor overpump inWellington, and now Auckland’s Central Interceptor with Ghella Abergeldie Joint Venture. They have also provided specialist design expertise and pumps following the Kaikoura earthquakes and Southland oods. Glenn says the Prime Pump team are seasoned industry professionals aware of New Zealand conditions, and backed by the best engineering available globally. They are also exible. No job is too small, too large or too complex. At Moa Point, a staggering 928 million litres of sewage was pumped by six 8” BBA BA180 auto prime dewatering and sewer bypass pumps over 215 hours, supported by Prime Pump sta . All during lockdown. Glenn says meeting large-scale infrastructure challenges is enormously satisfying. “We’ve been working with some massively talented people and highly organised companies who, like ourselves, are very focussed on protecting this country’s waterways, ora and fauna, and communities.” “Our pumps are regularly used in situations where lives, livelihoods, and the environment are at stake. Because of that we feel a real responsibility to deliver leading technology, quality, e ciency, and reliability every day.” Prime Pump’s combination of hire and sales provides exibility and allows for quick turnaround to accommodate changing needs wherever pumps are operating, or required. A single point of contact ensures consistency in service and clarity of communication, essential when time is tight, the project is critical, and stakeholder expectations are high. (Which, Glenn says, is almost always). From 2500 kg pumps to 3” anges, every detail is minutely managed. Among the pumps deployed at the Central Inceptor to date have been the Netherlands-designed and manufactured BBA BA100s, with suction and discharge hoses, and sediment tanks. John Jones, Prime Pump Civil and Mining Sales Engineer, says the pumps have more than proven their mettle during the initial development stages. The purpose-built 20m³ capacity tanks allowed contractors to see inside without using steps or ladders – a signi cant Health and Safety bene t. One of the specialisations of Prime Pump’s BBA pumps is management of bentonite – essential to the Central Interceptor project. Bentonite was used to ensure that a Diaphragm wall, (or D wall), a deep structural support for the Mangere shafts, would not collapse during drilling or excavating. A BBA BA150 was used to reticulate the bentonite in the tanks and also pump bentonite from the tank to the D wall. Eleven Proril submersible slurry pumps have also been onsite. Engineered for professional use in tough dewatering applications in construction, industrial sites, and mines, these pumps have the bene ts of a compact design and patented ACrS technology. Wear resistant and portable, they provide economical solutions to site drainage requirements. The Proril Stormy 355 and Stormy 455 pumps were used to mix bentonite in the storage tanks, while the Stormy 4110 was used to pump sludge back through the treatment plant. Run-o and seepage from the tunnels is being pumped to ground-level by Swedish-manufactured Grindex submersible slurry pumps. Chosen for their low running cost, light weight and ability to run-dry, the exceptionally durable pumps perform no matter the conditions, avoiding issues including pump failures, maintenance, excess sediment build-up and costly downtime. Glenn is hugely appreciative of the e ort and knowledge John Jones has contributed. A former British Army mechanic, John has a rare depth of hands-on expertise. His extensive experience includes honing his skills working for Vodafone, Kenworth, and TransDiesel, before joining the Prime Pump team. “John has done an exceptional job. Whatever has been needed from a pumping perspective, he’s been across it. His signi cant international experience and background in trouble-shooting has been invaluable.” Global pumping expertise from a Kiwi business
